World Tour 2012
« on: October 06, 2011, 07:30:10 pm »
How about setting up regional meet-ups, and shipping GZ from point to point. He has already ridden through all the lower 48 and the provinces, and by that time he will probably be ready to hang out in one place for more than one night. After all, he's a people person.;D

Sounds like it might work. We would probably need to draw up smaller regions so members would not be out of reach from the outskirts of the region. Smaller, more numerous regions would divide the available time for each region into smaller segments though. Get out your maps and start kickin' ideas around!

We need to arrend  events as a griop at times.. GZ and sohc riders go to Laconia, Daytona, Barber, Sturgis, Bonneville, Bonneville GP... that sort of thing..

Get folks out riding and meeting each other on sohcs..

Willow Springs for the SoCal riders, Laguna Seca for the NorCal riders? If we aren't constrained by a continuous, linear ride, the meet-ups can be scheduled for the events. Daytona one week, Cal the next week, whatever...

Just kicking around ideas, here: let's say Bonneville is a destination. Riders from the SW could gather together in, say Four Corners. (I would love to ride through S.Utah before heading north to B'ville.) At the same time, riders from the NW could begin gathering as they work their way south. Think of many small streams that become a river...

Do you not want to do the Rally similar to what was done this year? If not, I think a lot of riders who did not get a chance to participate will be disappointed.
Not saying it should be exactly the same, as I think after what we went through we have learned and could be even better.

I had envisioned something of a combination of the two. I think the spirit of the relay dictates rider-to-rider handoff, shipping the baton would be a last resort due to extenuating circumstances. Having more time to prepare a schedule should provide more of an opportunity to include major events, or even start new regional ones. Things were pretty hectic right up until kick-off of our first relay, especially riding point. An event as large as Daytona Bike Week and we were still only able to produce one relay rider is a pretty good indication that life still tends to get in the way of motorcycling, no matter how hard we try. Biketoberfest will be celebrated in Daytona next weekend, which only happens to be an hour and a half from me, and it looks like I will be hunting alligators instead since it is raining cats and dogs this weekend (three to six inches forecast).

If we need more time then we might consider starting earlier. Of course, this puts different constraints on regional weather conditions since we can't schedule this for everyone to ride in the middle of summer. That works for me because summertime in Florida usually involves sweltering heat and torrential afternoon rains. This does bless us with almost three full seasons of riding weather though, so I'm not complaining. Of course, starting earlier means we're running out of time to prepare!

So get out your maps and calenders and start putting some plans together! It's going to rain here all weekend and that's exactly what I plan on doing, so don't be surprised to see a more detailed suggestion soon...

Just some ideas with some opinion mixed in, let's hear some more!

A combination of the two makes sense, especially for the vast areas of the Southwest. Texas scrambled to get a rider out to N. Mexico, but found one.
How 'bout if 'zilla gets ridden or shipped to an area, Texas for example, and our region [Dallas, Houston, Austin] does the planning of it for the 3 weeks or so that we have it. And then if we can't find a rider, it gets shipped to the next region.
The issue I had this year is that 'zilla was in Austin 1 night during the week and an important work project kept me from riding [but I did spend the evening at the campground with the riders and had a great time].
I would like to see Texas have 3 weekends -
Dallas, Houston, Austin/San Antonio.

Notice I named this thread World Tour 2012. I had always referred to this year as a relay, not a rally, because that is what it was: a linear hand-off to hand-off. Due to this, we HAD to keep a tight schedule, since every delay was passed down the line. We covered a lot of miles, but unfortunately a lot of people got left out. That's what got me thinking about regional meet-ups. It might allow more member's to meet up, for longer. Also, it would reduce weather concerns. Keep the ideas coming! ;D

Well that whole area you describe is really what we call baha Oklahoma, excepting few parts of the LS state near  El Paso and Amarillo.

Bigger picturethan the three cities would give a better experience, and instead of the city think of the landscape.  Palo Duro,  Possum Kingdom, etc.

A series of events would make it possible for people less fortunate than me, (those with jobs) to schedule a vacation day and more people could participate. More riders could ride together to meet at an event. There were some people that auctually made big sacrifices to got GZ from point A to B. They may not be as willing to repeat that performance.

Right you are Don. I was just thinking exactly that. Our Ausie bros won't be doing a steady ride (way too much turf to cover). Anyone that did over 1-1.5 K miles over here did it because it HAD to be done!!
It was a hell of an accomplishment and I'm glad I got to be a part of it but it would be more realistic to do the regional meets as you propose. Many obstacles were tackled this year (weather,  time off from work at a moments notice, some members doing waaaay too many miles to connect ( if they liked it or not!!!). I live in central Calif........I would be lucky to meet with maybe 10 other members within a 100 mile radius. Some members would only be able to meet with 1 or 2 if they're lucky!!!! It would be cool to come up with a plan that will flow for everyone in 2012.

When he gets through (survives) the English winter why not just turn him around and we can do a reverse tour?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I really liked the way it went this past year even thought Radam and I had to ride all the way to LA due to the meet up rider breaking down, and the confusion about the meet up in Dennison TX was a bit of a problem but still much worth it.

If we are planning a Locale meet up.. May I suggest Bikes Blues and BBQ in Fayetville AR next Sept.  dates for next year are Sept 26 - 29. It is a pretty big rally and attended by many from Kansas, OK, AR, TX, MO, LA.  It is a free rally with lots of demo rides (usually Harley, Victory, Yamaha, Suzuki and Can Am - Sypder),  music (most free) lots of vendors and some good BBQ contest.  they even added some moto-cross stuff this year.

I rode my 350F up and down Dickson street and got lots of positive comments.  This is also an All Makes rally.

Any way.. I still liked the baton relay but I am willing to participate in something else this time.

I've noticed quite a few new members in the last few months, in some of the areas where participation was lacking last time. Maybe we can pull this off again as a true relay? :-\

I'm in a area GZ didn't do.
It has a rather good bike run for cancer, maybe we kind of extend his run and send him out for special events?

More info is here: http://ride4thecure.ca/
