Is the information that has been exposed by WikiLeaks benificial, or would it have been best to not know about it?

The truth is...well... elusive at best. This thread is sympathetic to the Peace threads elsewhere.

What WikiLeaks disclosed is nothing more than par for the course. Corruption, mis-use of funds, deceit, etc. nothing new there, been going on since the beginning of time.

I'd agree with that.

My response did not address the question so well. "beneficial or should have done without it"?

I think it was beneficial in confirming that this conflict (pseudo-war) is no different than any other in terms of deceipt, fraud, misuse of funds, "war crimes" etc. Regardless of how much I may or may not support the effort, I wouldn't want hisotry to record the effort as more (or less) moral than it was (is). In other words, lay it all out.

The "dudness" comes from this, in my mind. There is one unspoken (usually) goal in all this. No more attacks on US soil. If in 2002, one had said there would be no more attacks (of any significance) on US soil few of us would have agreed. Yet here we are. So the vast population is willing to look away. Does the end justify the means? Of course not. But we have philosophy and pragmatism (and human beings being human beings) bumping heads as they often do. And this is the inevitable result.

So its good they did what they did. And they will stand the consequences, if any.

I've been trying to work out if this brutal truth is worth knowing about.

A requirement of our representatives is to be open, transparent and honest, and if that may not be the case in certain circumstances, where does all of this take us?

I can see that it could and more than likely does lead to negativity and so what is the point of it all.

Does it change anything except for the way that we think or do we sit back and say "That's what happened and that's just how it is"

If it brings about more accountability from our politicians then i am all for it, even though i expected what has been released, i think its in everybody's best interest because, governments prey on the gullability of its constituents, and there are plenty that will still deny these documents, but in the long run, knowledge is power and the more power to the people the better......

Well getting the gov to be less obscure and secretive is good, the people are/have been told over the years that an informed citizenry is the key to democracy ( good Government) and in this day of instant info, the gov has decided now that it may not be a good idea, hmmm. I say hold their feet to the fire, toast their toes, be an informed citizenry and maybe we'll eventually get them to tell the truth more often and treat us as adults. I swear to god the next mother #$%*ing politico that reaches to pat me on the head, whilst saying there there old timer will pull back a stump.

I couldn't disagree more, how can it be an attack on the citizens, it exposed reasons as to why some countries are treated with disdain, People found out what Governments were really thinking instead of the bull#$%* we are fed by the media, through their own press releases. If this is any way bad for the citizens then it's caused by the Governments in the first place and we need to know this.
There were releases from Russia, not too sure about China but i can tell you, Nothing is off limits to wikileaks. Too bad if it made the Government look bad, they deserve it. They are the ones putting us in danger and hiding what they do doesn't help anyone but the ones doing the wrong thing.
