1976 Frame
« on: October 10, 2011, 09:42:55 pm »
In an earlier post I mentioned that a previous owner had cut off the rear upper shock mounts on my 1976 CB750K to lower the shocks using a home made lowering assembly (read: butchered).

I was going to have some new shock posts fabricated and welded onto my existing frame to straigten things out but recently ran across two rolling chassis from 1971 with many useable parts, including the frames, for only $200.00.

Are the frames from 1971 the same as from 1976? If so, it might be just as cost effective to simply swap frames. I heard that Honda improved and strengthened the swingarms in 1976, and the part numbers are different, but I thought you folks with more knowledge than me might know definitively if a straight swap is possible.

Frame part numbers:
1976 - 50100-341-670ZA
1971 - 50010-341-010B - same number to and including 1975

71 used a different seat mount, I need one.. plus a seatpan or seat. I think the seat mounts interchange. The rest is very close to same. The 71 front end is different inside and brakemount and fender mounts are different.

Get them and try to build a 71.

I may be able to cut what you need  (for the 76)off a frame and sell it to you.

I dont know of a difference in swingarm between 71 and 76 other than bushings inside. 71 used a plastic chainguard , not sure if mounts are same as later. 76 has a sidestand with the rubber that is a change from earlier ones.

Do you have decent headlite ears, speedo or tach?

The later chain guards bolted on front and back on the outside with a bolt close to the front outer bolt on the inside . The K1 had same bolts outside (not sure about spacing ) but had a clip on the inside similar to the clips that hold the rear plastic mud guard in place . I can see no external difference between them that would make one stronger than the other . Use a early pivot bolt with zerks on both sides . This makes greasing easier and puts grease right at each bushing unlike the later versions with one zerk on the swing arm in the center .

The mounting bolts, spacing, is a little different in the plasctic K1 chain cover and the later K2-K6 metal ones.

If you could cut the rear shock mounts off a '76 frame that would be great... they may actually go through a hole in the frame and were then welded on originally. Just let me know and I can get them welded back on my 76 frame here and be good to go.

I may buy the 71 parts for $200.00. Apparently there are 2 rolling frames with good wheels, 1 engine with good compression, 1 seat, 1 tank, 3 fenders and a few other parts. Maybe I can make one '71 out of the 2 of them. More projects!

As for title, no worries up here in Canada. We just sign a declaration that the bike is ours and we're away. It can apparently be later challenged by someone with proof of ownership, but I've never heard of that happening.

Another thought... does anyone make the "screw in and weld on" upper rear shock mounts for standard Honda shocks? I was surfing around and found these after market shocks that come with a conversion kit and got to thinking... someone must make these upper rear threaded bolts for stock shocks.

It's the second item in the following link:

Got your PM.. I will try to look at the welds on one.. pretty sure they are bigger on the back for more support.. just welding to outside may be weaker..
