Gauge disassembly question
« on: October 12, 2011, 06:18:25 PM »
The speedometer on my 76 750 fogs up routinely after sitting in the sun and then being exposed to cooler air when riding.  There seems to be a film on the inside of the glass that I'd like to clean.  The two halves of the unit seem to be held together by a pressed ring that I apparently have to open up to get apart.  Before I go for it, is there something I don't know about taking these gauges apart?  Just trying to avoid the usual dope slap...

Do a search on the forum. There is a good thread with pics about separating the unit to get at the inside. I recall one trick I used from that thread is the ol' paint can opener to bend back the bottom side of that ring to get it off. The fun part is trying to crimp that ring back on without marking up the top side of the ring.

Thanks I'll see if I can find it - I tried but obviously used the wrong search terms.  The main thing I needed to know was whether the ring was the way in.  And yes it occured to me that crimping would be a trick  ;D

Here's the thread using the paint tin opener
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=58003.0

Somebody else here suggested using a dremel and cutting the ring at one spot, to me this sounds much easier and you can just solder it back together and won't even see the join if you position it where it can't be seen. I disassembled mine using the paint opener method and I found it slow and awkward and it was hard to get the ring back right and without damage. Can't find the thread about cutting it with a dremel though.
