CB400F Engine paint
« on: October 16, 2011, 05:01:22 PM »
Does anyone have any suggestions for the correct engine paint for a 1975 400F?
It appears that the engine covers are painted rather than brushed/cleared aluminum like my other Honda's,but it is in need of some detailing to put it lightly.
I was hoping there was an aresol match that I could use to repaint the engine and covers.Maybe dupli-color?

I like VHT aluminium caliper paint baked at 170 for an hour.  Tough, cheap, and about as Honda silver as it gets.  Got mine at Autozone.

Here's my 400F case I just painted with DupliColor.   I don't know how close to stock this is but I like the color.

I used VHT flat black on my Mac exhaust and am pleased with the result. But the exhaust is steel and aluminum doesn't paint easily. So 'how it looks' is just the first pass. Will it stay stuck to aluminum is the important question.

I have about 300 miles on a VHT painted engine and it is holding up well even with gas and oil spills on it.  I did notice one small area that it flaked off and underneath appeared to not have been cleaned well.  A quick wipe with lacquer thinner and a bit of brush touch-up and a short run to warm it up cured that.

I used Duplicolor Aluminum on my 400F side cases and it matched the original paint flawlessly. The original and the duplicolor sit side by side and aside from 30 some years of age you can't tell the color apart. I also used a clear coat on top. Can't speak to the durability as I haven't got a title or insurance yet and have only been on a few short runs.

I am curios if Honda has actual paint code for the motors?Specifically the 400F.
With the clutch and sprocket covers being painted I want to get it right.
