engine case protection
« on: May 15, 2006, 07:19:37 PM »
I've just begun a 550 project for the track am I'm under the impression that the left side of the case could leak oil if the bike went down on that side.  Can any of you racer types tell me what you are using to protect your engine case.
thanx.

As you lay the bike down, try and keep a body part between the bike and the track( avoid the exhaust)
Some guys manu a bracket out of flat bar and mount it from the frame out to the engine extremity and then along the cover, insulating it from the engine with rubber strip.

Cushion the falling bike with a body part?  I always do that.  About now I'm ready to move on to the second option.

Thanks for your reply.

There are always case protectors on eBay for these bikes.  There minimalist in design.

I've never used them, but often wondered if I should.. maybe I shouldn't wonder too much about that.  ;) Anyway, there seem to be two designs, a two point and a three point. The two point seems like it isn't much protection for anything but a fall-over while parked. The three point appears as though it might offer more protection if you went down at any speed. Anyone have experience with the two design approaches?

Bob, the two point is the one I've seen most, it's not a "crash bar"  more just a slider to keep valuable engine covers off the tarmac.

I generally like the appearance of the minimal bars often seen on 500/550's.  But, frankly, if I'm laying the bike down, I'm not too worried about scratching up my engine casings.

My priority list:

1 - my head
2 - my body
3 - my like-new Sunrise Orange gas tank :)

i have also heard that the 'crash guards', can sometimes do as much damage, as with out havin them on..... they are fall of the side stand protection, not crash protection as such, you will also find if you are gonna go racing with them on, they will hit the ground.... just a though..peace
