You are a Winner.................the story goes that Mr. Honda dropped out of engineering school because he was running a small foundry making replacement rings for Toyota (Mr. Toyoda) cars. Their original rings only lasted a few thousand miles. Mr. Toyoda learned that the Honda replacement rings were better, so he asked if he would supply the car manufacturer. Mr. Honda replied that he would rather sell the foundry which resulted in sufficient capital to fund his first motorcycle production factory.  This was in the early to mid-1950s.

OK...............you get to ask the next question ;)

Ok, I'll try...Besides being less expensive to produce, why did the factory
build the first 7400-ish 750s with sandcast engine cases?

They were waiting for the diecasting molds to get made.... Time consuming..
But I think the real reason was they were not sure they could sell enough units to amortize the cost of the molds.

What was the three number parts code for the CR750 kit.  Bonus question, what was the claimed HP increase?

Something like that, yes. They, for several reasons, had reservations as whether or not the bike would sell as expected, so due to cost of die cast tooling, they held back until
sales took off. They were concerned that the new car they were developing at the time was too close in price to that of the bike, which
seemed to make the bike a lesser value. Another concern was that the 750 might somehow be viewed as anti social and wreck their image, you meet the nicest people campaign vs.a new superbike the likes of which nobody ever saw before. Most notably, the company was nervous about the US government laws at the time concerning vehicle safety, worried
that there might be problems with "Ralph Nader" types, because they had the same type problems with the japanese government when
the 750 was in developement..........(source "Honda Motorcycles", by
Aaron P. Frank and according to Mr. Hansen.) The way I understand it...
Sandcast was the conservative approach amid uncertainty. And there's probably more to it than that IMHO. And PLEASE correct if any of my information is not accurate. :)

I heard a story about the new 750 factory tieing up all of Honda's assets and someone in a board meeting asked, what if no one buys them? Hence the sandcast rush to send them to california to see if anyone buys them.
Mine was the first one (red) sold in Galesburg Il. in jan of 70 and titled as a 70, the second one was a ( blue/green) low number diecast in the 9,000 range. A bike shop owner near here has the second blue green one. He assembled them both from the crate.

Anyone know the cam number for the 85 HP version (or was it 88 HP)? This was their famous "Sport Kit", which came in 2 types, both sporting the .50mm oversize pistons, but with 2 different cams.
