CB550 question on flipping brake caliper
« on: October 25, 2011, 03:17:37 PM »
hi

question making the leading edge brake a trailing edge brake.  That is swapping fork tubes and flipping the wheel around to match on a CB550.

any experience on this?

wondering about the safety aspect too given the force goes from tension to compression.  I figure it would be OK but nothing like a few data points to confirm.

thanks

No experience to offer, but I've heard that is a performance upgrade.

Do a search for caliper reversal and dual disc conversion. I believe there's something in the brake faq as well. Read what comes up then decide if it's something you want to do. I've done it. I like it. I read everything I could find about it first. Not terribly difficult if you decide to do it.

I did this on my 750K2 years ago, worked very well.
I'd keep the wheel as is, not flip that around or your speedo will run backwards ;)

I guess it would look kinda funny if you flipped the calipers and ran the rain guard(s) on the front, huh?

 Remind me of the advantages?

I never understood the use of those small black plastic guards: they won't keep the disc dry, for the most of that is exposed to the weather anyway, besides it's stainless...the headers will get wet also, guards or not.
The advantage of "flipped" calipers is a better weight distribution, makes for lighter handling, and a cleaner look of the front side.
All bikes have nowadays their calipers behind the fork legs...why?
