73 CB500 Four - Gas Tank Bolt Gone
« on: October 26, 2011, 10:44:54 AM »
Riding today and tank felt loose where it meets seat. Looks like the bolt snapped with nut that secures it there. Just replace with new bolt and nut and move on? Just want to make sure there is nothing else to evaluate. Seems easy enough to put something else on. I can reach hole ok to tighten new bolt by taking air filter out. Missing anything?

Yup, rubber grommet.  Check ebay for 'cb500 tank rubber' to see what we're talking about.

Ok. The screw is there and fine (from the top) as well as the larger rectangular pad/spacer, just missing the piece you mentioned. I'll bolt on for now, but get a new proper one. Thanks!

If the rear of your tank is secured with a bolt then you have something other than stock. The rear hold down on a CB500 is a rubber pad/strap that slides on to 2 tangs on the frame and stretches over the rear tank flange. How about posting a picture of your mount?

And DON'T drill the frame for a temp fix, it is bad form.  :)

Sorry, meant to reply sooner... I thought there was a hole aligned below with the screw that is in place to hold the rubber mounts. It was not aligned, so my temporary nut/bolt idea was no good. Zip-tied it for now until I can get a new rubber grommet. Thanks.

I'm thinking the bolt you're referring to is the front mounting bolt for the air cleaner. That's really the only bolt in this area. If it's missing, your AC is probably in danger of falling out. Otherwise, check to see if you're missing the front two tank mount grommets as well as the rear one.

Of course, that's only if you're still using the stock AC.

Air cleaner bolt is intact. There is a bolt/screw that mounts down through the rectangular rubber pad/spacer btwn the tank and frame and the grommet was on the other end of that. I think I am simply missing that rear grommet. The rest feels ok, but I can not actually get a visual on the front tank grommets.

That rubber piece in your hand is not correct.  You need one that inserts on those two tabs attached to the frame and lifts up over the tab that should be on the back of your tank.  Wrong tank also maybe?

Yep, you need the correct rear tank rubber, part #17613-286-000.  Call your local Honda dealer, or get one online from your favorite vendor.

That makes more sense. No screw needed then? See the screw in my very first pic... I see where that is not needed with the correct rubber mount, but is that screw hole on the tank original or was that added to mod with the rubber piece that I have? Frame looks original with the tabs, but does tank portion look right/stock?

Here's the grommet you need and its attachment to the bike. No bolts or other "spacers":

The tank just slides into the shaped slot in the grommet. Hope this clears things up.

Your tank appears stock, and the hole is supposed to be there.  I don't know why it's there (maybe the factory hung it from a hook for painting), but it has nothing to do with mounting the tank.

Many thanks (seriously). My local shop has to order... zip-tie with whatever my rubber mount is until then.
