Another blank engine id badge
« on: October 28, 2011, 10:30:42 pm »
Howdy, first posting here. Lots of info, nice site.
So I picked up a k7 with three spare engines and an extra head and cylinder. Plan on K-balling the spare engines for parts and parting out the rest to fund a mild Cafe project on the k7. Unfortunately one of the engines has a blank engine id badge. It has a 10 bolt clutch cover so not a sandcast. Fin supports are not cast so not a 77 (i think).
Anyone know what I have here?  :P

Between serial # 26,*** to early K3 production. clues as to early to late in that range exist around the end of the oil galley cap are, above the points.. a bit tricky to explain.
Check the sprocket shaft, could even be a late set with early topend..

These tend to be early engines. When a chain break took the engine cases out under warranty the dealer was supposed to remark the new top case with the original serial number, but this was skipped occasionally. So this is probably an early engine with whatever engine cases Honda supplied when the repair was done. From my research very few or no sandcast cases were supplied as replacements, presumably the chain break issue started after the diecast cases were in production.

It seems like the head is the same as my other two engines (k2 & k6) but maybe the k2 has a later head on it (or i'm screwing up my id#'s and it is a k3). The supports are studs that appear to be pressed in from the bottom. Are they multi year compatible? My k7 bike has supports that are part of the casting (see pick bellow). I will take the oil gallery plug off and try taking a pick of that and post it.
