Suggestions on these 550 carbs
« on: November 08, 2011, 02:44:19 PM »
Hello all I cleaned these carbs about 3 months ago with simple green diluted with water then rinsed them after they were done soaking. I put them up on a shelf and the other day I pulled them down to fit onto the engine for the tank I was putting on and noticed this white deposite all over them.

Lastnight the wife was out so I put them in the dishwasher and after the white deposits are still there. I think  this is a chemical reaction with the simple green but thought I rinsed them really good.

Any suggestions on what I can do to help get them clean again would be very much appreciated. I know I can scrub most of it off but was thinking of soaking them again in something to get them clean again.

Thanks Matt

I had the same problem when I soaked mine the frist tiem..What I did was take them all apart..I know it sounds like a big job but it isn't really... I found a break down page that was a step by step.. And it can be fun .. I cleaned my carbs with bathroom bowl cleaner and then washed and dryed with a heat gun..So that wouldn't happen.. then polished the carb bodies with a dremel and put them back together...

I wouldn't go as far as taking the choke apart, but if you really want to clean..

You could maybe try white vinegar & a toothbrush. It wasn't white oxidation, but it worked a treat on my float bowls back here:

How long did you guys soak those carbs?  I used Simple Green and the bodies came out  fine, although there has been mention in other threads of Simple Green darkening aluminum.

Thanks for the replies guys. I only did the soak for a hour or so with the simple green and then rinsed real good. I will wait for a few more responses and will do some more research before I do anything else to them. Let ya all know what happens.

I soaked mine in PineSol for 24hrs (50/50 water/pinsol)and they came out flawless... polished the tops with a dremel.

I used lacquer thinner. Soaked them for 24 hours. Then I boiled several parts in vinegar / water mix.  Last I replaced all rubbers and gaskets cleaned the jets with a Torch tip cleaner. Lastly I squirted a little 3n1 oil on the slides / linkages and gave each one a few pumps. They look brand new and work well.

have you tried brillo pad an some elbow grease to get the white build up off, if you take them all apart try 50/50 simple green with some heat under the bowl, camping stove or turkey burner works well
