18 $ paint job
« on: November 10, 2011, 02:16:46 pm »
For those of you who dabble in body work or those on a shoe string budget- step away from the Krylon and step away from the Rustoleum .
Urethane based 2K paint is the only way to go . It is solvent (gas) resistant and tougher than that last slice of pizza that'd been in the fridge for a week :)
Now I have seen and done some pretty nice spray bomb jobs back in the day but they chip so easy you could scratch all that hard work away with your finger nails!
Also the inevitable drip at the pump (and it will happen sooner or later no matter how careful you are) and it's ruined.

Step in Spray Max 2K in a can =  this stuff is great ! Use to use some duplicolor enamel  or whatever suited my needs from the local parts store and shoot the 2K Clear over it for gas proofing and High Gloss but I found out you can order Spray Max 2K loaded with any color paint code from any vehicle you like! I was excited to see how some of the metallic paints which traditionally would be should in two stages would do in the can and I am very impressed!

I used the paint code from a 2010 Honda Fit ( that's right a HoNDA :D ) it was a Brilliant Orange metallic which was kinda of a darker burnt brown goldish orange and it came out pretty awesome -

I did all you see below with one can  from here  http://www.66autocolor.com/default.asp    18$  Not to shabby and I am gonna pull up beside a Honda Fit after I wrap up my striping and decal work for a picture to show how spot on the color was!

anywho here are cell phone  pix, more to come after I finish the decals-

$18bux!

even had enough to do an old scratched up helmet.....

thanks, It was just mocked up there . 6$ from China :)  I am on the fence about were to put them but they definately add a touch of class . Here is a rough much up of moving it on the tank instead- I really like them on the cowl but then I have to think of something to do with all that real estate up there on the tank ...  so many options.....

Also can't decide whether or not to paint the headlight bucket, fork ears ,and fork lowers. Don't wanna over do it but - it might look nice-
Thinking about black out my rims as well as the rear rim has some surface rust that is gonna get excavated and I like the look of blacked out rims at least I am partial to the idea given my options :)

I've used the SprayMax 2k epoxy primer and filler primer and they worked great.   Another option for color and clear: I bought a basecoat/clearcoat gun from Harbor Freight ($30) and spent $65 on Honda Element metallic orange, clearcoat, reducer and activator at my local auto paint store.

Fresh paint is sexy :o

is it an optical illusion or is that left side cover missing the upper left corner?   still, 100$  versus 18$ and you have to have a compressor and basic knowledge  and more importantly clean up afterwards....just sayin'    :P- that is a dang fine paint job though -

Thanks for posting the link.  I've used the clear 2k over Duplicolor with good results.  Did you use clear over the orange?  .It looks real good..Larry

Clear was already in the can with the color- much stronger than clearing over enamel which lokks great but just not as tough.

I think you are referring to the flake sunrise orange-that is a 3 step process, do not see how that could be done in one can as it is base, flake and then clear.  But I could be wrong...Larry

It would be very nice to at least collect some codes for the "simple" metallic colors that Honda used, like Briar Brown, Freedom Green, etc.

Anyone knows any?
