It's always appreciated when someone keeps you in mind. I got a call last week from Dennis Harris of Harris Motors. At one time they were a Honda Dealer and from what I understand sold a ton of Honda's over the years.

Both Dennis and his Father have always been more than eager to talk Honda's. Dennis called me last week and asked if I would like this. Heck Yes!

Found it on a shelf, 31 years old and in great shape.

Thanks again guys!  8)

Cool article!

Yeah, it's about four pages or so. Explains why Honda went to the touring setup on the 81/82 models. I need to read the whole thing.

Was nice of them to do that.  ;)

Since I am waiting on parts thought I would shim the valves. Yikes!  :o

After some reading and talking with the guru Mike Nixon valve lash should be .005 all across. The valves are within spec now but he told me the CBX loves the .005 clearance to get the most bang.

For every 0.001 inch over the standard 0.003 inch clearance, you will gain some 20 psi.

I have five (5) at .005. Nineteen (19) to adjust.  ::) Never done this before and have to mic everyone and record. I'm looking for 25 mm shims. (posted in the wanted section)

Well, wish me luck!

ToyTuff,

There is a spreadsheet available for calculating the shim size you need for your desired clearance.  I got one off the cbxworld site in 2010, but it actually didn't work right for me and when I bought the shims that it calculated, they were WAAAY off.  Maybe I didn't understand it completely.

Anyway, I built my own spreadsheet (but using OpenOffice rather than Excel) and will try to attach it in case you would like to use it. Others with shims might find it useful as well. Edit - This forum disallows uploading .ods files, so I used OpenOffice to save the spreadsheet in .xls format.  Hopefully it is compatible with MS Office excel

Also, Yamaha shops may have the shims you need since the Venture and others used the same diameter shims.

Good to know that Mike Nixon (I have his carb book) recommends .005.  I would not have guessed that, and had targeted a tighter clearance on mine as can be seen in the row entitled "Target Valve Clearance  (thousandths of Inch)".  You can set that to whatever clearance you are shooting for.

I am due to check my CBX valve adjustment too... sigh.

I am a member there also but could not download an excel doc. I bought all of Mike's books and he has a pretty simple chart in the back.

The formula is C-B times X (remember CBX)

C= current
B= desired clearance
X= shim size removed.

I'm looking for an assortment of shims and when you get to yours drop me an email. I'll have extras. Just a note, about any 25 mm shim works. Even Toyota.

Thanks for the reply.

And hooked it up to your CB500? It was in roughly the same shape.

Funny you should ask. Just got a pic last night. Zinc plated hardware is done.

Moving forward.  ;)

(remainder cut for brevity...

I would not argue with Mike, but I have to wonder if there has been some sort of mis-interpretation.  I would agree that at low rpm you might gain cylinder pressure since you would effectively reduce the duration for which the valve is "off seat".  This would be like running a slightly milder cam.  But I expect you are trading higher cylinder pressure at low rpm for lower psi at higher "real world" rpm

This is defiantly not my forte.  ;)

I can only go with 40 plus years of experience versus my limited knowledge of the CBX motor.

Nice shiny zinc plated parts. I think I am going to look into Caswells zinc kit for spokes and fastners and brackets...

I'm sure Mike will send me an update report. I'll post when it does.

It was $175.00 extra to do but well worth it IMO.
