I always thought that our CBs use JIS screws (japanese crosspoints)    I was looking to buy a new set of drivers and hopefully an impact driver bit.

I was able to find (from the search function) some JIS standard crosspoint screwdrivers at MCMaster-Carr and also on Stanley's website - but they haveno #3 type.

I found another post that said there is a notation in the Honda manual that states that the bikes use ISO screws and bits.  Anybody have a manual handy that can confirm that ?  Mine are out in the shop.

For years, I've just ground down the tip a hair on my impact bits, but it still tries to deform the phillips bits on the engine covers.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Just took a peek at the manual for my 750. References to JIS vs. ISO seems to be limited to bolts, ie., threads and bolt head dimensions. As far as I know, the cross-head (Phillips) screw heads are JIS. I suspect more than a few folks have just used any handy Phillips head driver to deal with them though.  ;)

"Often improperly referred to as Japanese Phillips. Commonly found in Japanese equipment. JIS looks much like a Phillips screw (and even more similar to Frearson), but is designed not to cam out and will, therefore, be damaged by a Phillips screwdriver if it is too tight. Heads are usually identifiable by a single raised dot to one side of the cross slot. JIS B 1012:1985 screw standard is throughout the Asia market and Japanese imports. The driver has a 57 degree point with a flat tip, parallel wings.


Advantages and Disadvantages of JIS

Most people and companies outside of Japan have absolutely no idea what they are. With the similarity in appearance to the Frearson and the Phillips the screws are often damaged in removing and installing with the wrong tools. JIS tends not to camout like Philips. The JIS driver can be used on Phillips quite easily but not reciprically. Drivers are not easily available in North America, try your local RC Airplane hobby shop. Most RC Helicopters use JIS screws to mount the propeller. JIS-spec cross-head screws are generally marked with a single raised dot or an "X". JIS always fit Phillip fasteners, but because of slight design differences, Phillips drivers may not fit JIS fasteners. (unless the tip is ground down a bit. "

True about local availability. I couldn't find any. However, easily found/ordered on-line, that's where I bought mine.

I have some JIS Screwdrivers from McMaster Carr but I do not know if there is a #3 amongst them.  If I can remember, I can go take a look and try and figure out how tell which one is #3.  You can come by and check these out if you wish.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I have the Mcmaster-carr JIS set.
Worth every penny, imho, when working on these bikes, especially for the smaller screws.
It's when you get into the carbs that you really appreciate them!

The only JIS screws you probably have on your bike (if you do at all) will be on the carburetors- look for the dot on the screw head.

The manual makes reference to the fact that the 750 uses ISO screws.
