I have never heard anyone complain about one. The ST Owners forum is full of 100,000 mile examples and I have 2 close friends that each had one for years. Stable, comfortable, stone reliable, and great handling. I have the ST1300 and love it, but folks tell me the 1100's are easier to ride and more stable due to 2" more in length. If taken care of, he's going to get a lot of trouble free miles.

I think it is one of Honda's masterpieces. If he is looking for a fast, comfy, great handling, and reliable sport touring bike,  it is hard to imagine going wrong with an ST1100.  I would have bought one as my first choice when I was looking for a replacement for my BMW K100RT but I ended up with a Concours just because it was about half the money of an ST1100. It's been great, but it is worth half the money of an ST1100.

This bike is number 1 on my next aquisition list!  40K on a '91 is nothing, if the price is right, jump aboard.

This all looks like normal wear to me. All of them sound the same - the gear driven cams just give the whirl you hear. I think you could give the bags a light sanding and a new urethane clear coat and they would look a lot better for cheap. The seat is a good $500 bonus and this bike looks 100% stock - a good thing. Now for ABS and that door on the tank - I would think that you could find them all over eBay used. The ABS problem may be the sensors, the drive motor, anything really. I like ABS so much that I would suggest fixing it. It may just save you one day. Use it's new parts expense to negotiate the best price for the bike, but get on the ST Owners website after your purchase and find the replacements used.

I have the 1300, but would do it all over again. Your cost of entry is cheap, hard to go wrong.

I am attaching a photo of my 1300's ABS unit - there in the upper right corner aboove the cylinder head and right of the coil. I don't know that they would be in the same location, but I would expect it to be similar in size and to be fairly accessable. Best of luck to you. Gordon
