CB175 Sidestand?
« on: May 21, 2006, 08:02:14 PM »
The sidestand on my CB175 is about 7-1/2~8" from the centerline of the bolt to the 'horizontal' plane of the footpad, and the bike leans at an insane angle when I try to use it.  The pin end doesn't look bent or trashed.  Is this about the right length or do I have a shorty sidestand??

Also, when I use the centerstand, it holds the bike upright, but the rear tire doesn't actually clear the ground; it's about 10-1/2" from C-L of hinge to the 'horizontal' line of the pad.  Ditto the hinge and all looks OK.  I can't believe this is right either, but it sure looks like it's the right one.

I don't know anything about the length of the stand but, do you have stock size tires?
If you have larger tires than stock, that can help to cause the  problems you are having. Is the
side bent at all (in the area of where the bolt goes in or anywhere in the mounting area?
Where the mount bolt goes through, is tha area eggshaped? That's all I can think of right off.

Tire size was the first thing I thought of as both stands are questionable, but...

Stock tire sizes = yup, both 18".

Sidestand hinge = not noticably bent, reasonably firm mounting.

Eggshape = nothing visible, but I haven't pulled it off yet.

When I drop the sidestand and the bike is still veritcal, the thing appears to be a couple of inches short.  When I lower it down, it tilts so much that I have to be very careful just so it doesn't just drop over onto the left side.  Both the side stand and the centerstand sure do look stock, but neither one seems to fit right.  Worse yet, I looked at the parts fiche and they look to be exactly the right parts.  Hmmmm, mystery.

I don't know the exact size tires that belong on the 175. In the old way of sizing, they might be some thing like:      front: 2:00 x 18  and  rear: 2:50 x 18 (Just an example) you need to check the complete tire size and compare that to what is recommended for it. The other part of the tire size has to due with the thickness (not the actual definition, I know) of the tire. If the tires themselves are larger, in that respect, the bike will sit somewhat higher. See what I mean? Check it out.     Bill

Is side stand part of footrest hanger? (are footrests bent even a little bit?)  Probably the bolt hole has worn and the angle in the 'U' is too large, you can close up the mount in a vice (very slightly) and possibly fit a larger diameter step bolt? For the centre stand, What angle is it sitting at if you look at bike side on? should only be about 15~20degrees, the lugs that stop on frame get dented in (they should be flat not concave) and also the frame itself wears as the pivot seizes into stand. ( repairable with weld) Are the 6mm clamping bolts straight or (usually) bent? if so the frame mount has stretched due to overtightening. I still have the special drift to remove stand pins on 175/200 twins. (its a piloted drift, OD same as pin, with shouldered end to prevent pin collapsing when you hammer it out.

I'm not familiar with the older sizing criteria.  How big of a deal is this:

Front:
Spec: 2.75-18-4
Actual: 3.00S18-4PR (Yokahoma)

Rear:
Spec: 3.00-18-4
Actual: 3.5H18 & 110/90H18 (Kenda; both sizes stamped on the tire)

I thought the 2.75 number was the width.  Are the 1/4" and 1/2" differentials actually tire height?  If so, enough to mess things up?  I'll have to check the specs vs. actual on the seat height, etc.

That might be enough, I'm not sure. Have you had a chance to check out what pj
said? Like pj said, it might be a good idea to tottally check out the stands , the mounting of
them and the rests that the stands are against when in the down position. I have a
Kawasaki F9 350 Big Horn that was laying over pretty good and I found the stand was
slightly bent in the area of the mount(or pivot) bolt. With some careful reshaping, it works
as good as new. Then again, I've got a CB77 that the center stand doesn't raise the rear
wheel enough to clear the ground and I believe that my problem is tire size. I may do a little
stand extending (just enough to do the trick) on mine,if all else checks out good. I'd like to
know what you come up with though. Catch you later, Bill

Chris, the sidestand on my 350f had the forked pivot end spread apart just a little bit. Hard to see unless you were looking for it. I closed it up and it made a huge difference. I have a '73 CB175 in the shop. I'll measure it and get back soon.

Thanks, it would be nice to actually know, although I'm thinking it's the wheels.  I measured the seat-floor and I'm about 3/4" too high from spec.  Although I know it's not the original seat, everything seems to be pointing at the tires being too tall.

My center and sidestand seem to be the same as your measurements. One thing I've never noticed on mine till now is the sidestand bracket seems to be bolted to the frame somehow, it was covered with gunk. Mines loose, letting the bike lean over quite a ways. On the centerstand I've got about an inch of clearance under the back wheel. HTH

Bolted you say?  Geez, if I find out mine is bolted too and simply spun a bit, I'm going to feel like quite a jackass.

Naw, you're not a jackass, you'll simply have learned something and that's what it's all about.
Seems to me that, whether you overlooked something or just didn't know, this site is all about
helping each other. Am I right?? If (at any given time) a lesson is learned, then all is well. Don't
get the idea that anyone is perfect because it's not true. We all can learn something.
