I hate my ______ because ...
« on: May 23, 2006, 07:11:45 PM »
Clutch cable - it broke on my way to work today.  Not ten miles from work, I just pulled off the interstate and was luckily right across the road from a gas station, about to make the last stretch through the desolate countryside, when my clutch lever slammed into the handle and the bike lurched and died.  The damn nubbly thing that catches in the slot of the lever ripped right off and dropped to the ground.  Sad me had to wait through a terribly long day, hoping not only that my local bike shop would have the new cable, but also that the bike would still be there when I got back.  So, here's the moral of my story.  Be prepared for anything.

I need help moving my project bike from Wisconsin to Seattle, WA.  Willing to pay well.  Contact if interested.

That 'nubby' thing.  You could buy and carry with you a spare  with a fixing screw. It's like a small barrel with a hole through the side for the cable and a small screw in the end to tighten and grip the cable. It is good enough to get you running and home.

I often post in a music forum and the language check is so lame that even the word "HELL" is automatically banned.

I think I envision this, sounds like an interesting little gadget to have along. Can you be more specific about what it's called and where to find one??

Bob they are actually called, wait for the hellfire and damnation, SOLDERLESS NIPPLES. I used to make up lots of cables at one time and over here they are not allowed on brake cables at anual test so here is a trick. On one side of the hole in the brass nipple that the cable goes through open up the diameter, push the cable through and "mushroom" the  end so it fits the bigger diameter then warm up the assembly and drop some solder in. Instant SOLDERED NIPPLE
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Hi Bob,As Brian says they are called solderless nipples. His answer makes a good repair but the idea of these is a "get you home" solution. Please excuse the rough freehand sketch. It is very simple to make if you have a lathe or a friend with access to one.

Tell you what Bryan, no wonder the DOT doesn't approve them. I've never used and I don't trust much on it either. I also rather solder them; less chances of going loose.

I like the idea of having a couple of these in my saddlebag. Where can I buy these in the U.S.? What sizes do I need?

DrMark: if not sure why not simply go into an automotive shop and ask '..excuse me, but what size should my nipples be?'  ;D

Thanks, understood the drawing fine and the next set of photos as well. Almost looks like the same principle used for joining elec. wires inside boxes before they came up with wire nuts.

Had one break on a 650 Yamaha as I pulled into my garage at a pretty good clip. Only time a ever used the kill button. Came in real handy!
