I got everything put back together as far as the rear brake assembly goes, thanks to MCRider for the photos! My only problem now is that the rear brake is constantly "engaged". Once I attach the bar that goes to the swing arm, I can barely get the brake connector to reach. Definitely much closer than it was, but I still must be missing something. It seems like the whole wheel needs to move forward a bit, but I can't seem to do it with that bar attached. Any idea what I'm doing wrong this time?

Oh, and I've also discovered a new enemy... this airbox gasket! Every time I go to put it in, it slips and twists all over the place. I seem to run into the stupidest setbacks!

The wheel should move forward and back easily through the adjuster slots (with the axle loosened of course) with the brake stay bar attached. That bar should be on a shoulder bolt where it connects to the brake panel, meaning that no matter how tight you tighten the bolt, the brake stay floats on the shoulder.

My only suggestion about the "constantly engaged" would be, is the lever arm on the brake panel on the brake cam at the proper location? It should be aligned with a dot on the lever to a dot on the end of the cam.

Yours looks like its pretty close, but maybe needs to rotate counterclockwise just a spline or two and that would fix it. If not, I don't know.

Actually, looking at yours... it may be on backwards? The head of the pinch bolt should be on the rear side. Mine has a button head in it, but still you can see the head of the pinch bolt is on the backside. Yours is on the front.

Thanks, I got the rear brake all sorted. Moved on to the airbox, what a pill! Finally managed to get the gasket to stop rolling and slipping all over the place by throwing it in the freezer for a bit. Next on my list is to tackle the handlebar controls and get those all patched up. I turned my attention to an '82 CB900F that I got for free, got it running but then it stalled out on me. Pulled the plugs and they're soaked in gas, so I'm letting them dry out for a bit.  Cylinder 4 wasn't firing at all, though so I gotta get that figured out. My Picasa account got all buggered up, so at some point I have to go through and fix all my photos on this thread, since a lot of people have found them useful.

Yeah, I felt pretty clever! So today I got the airbox in, got the new euro bars drilled, ran the cables and mounted them. I've gotta do some soldering on the right hand controls and those should be good to go. Having some wiring issues as far as color coding now that I'm starting to get everything hooked together. I'm using the wiring harness from PartsNMore for a '75, so I think I just need to get a color wiring diagram for the '75 and see how it matches up with the '76. So tomorrow I want to get the soldering finished, I also need to get the Randakk oil filter tightened up so I can oil up the top end and top off the oil. So at this point once I get the wiring locked down I just need to throw a battery in and see if it turns over and take it from there.

Oh, I also got a 1976 California motorcycle license plate I want to use, just have to clear it with the DMV!

Aaargh! What's the best way to remove the powder coating?

Try a small hand held propane torch. Just burn it off.

This project has seen it's third home in as many years. Just moved to Orange, CA. I at least have a garage at this place! Going to spend time just getting it cleaned up, then I've got to get into the wiring and get this thing running. When I moved it, there was a lot of water that came out of the exhaust... should I be concerned about that?

Just dry em out and then I read somewhere about oiling up the insides and then get em hot to burn the oil out. Keeps em from rusting? IDK

Glad to see you're back at it.

I'm about to begin my rebuild of the same year/model bike... you're experiences will be VERY helpful.

I'll start a thread about my rebuild, here's a shot of one of the first things I need to deal with...

YIKES! Besides the rubber bumper for the top of your fork ear, you do know about the washer shim that should go in that top bridge clamp don't you? I can't assume that you do as i don't want you to brake that clamp! Please respond, for your sake and my sanity.   :D   :D   :D

The K6 parts fiche doesn't show that washer as being included (the K5 does). I know my K6 doesn't have them and I don't see any on pictures I have of original K6's.

I may have mispoke in this case. I should preface my comments with, my experience drops offf quickly after K2. The clamp spacer was used in the unicorn style top bridge, which stopped at K2. I thought that the clamp was then modified so that it wouldn't break and the spacer is no longer needed. But the clamp in that picture looked like it needed the spacers. So what happened between K2 and K6 I'm not sure of.

So after k2, rely on your trusted microfishies as to whether you need the spacer. I never saw a non-unicorn style top bridge break.
