1975 CB550K Swingarm bushing removal
« on: February 20, 2012, 07:56:40 AM »
OK, i have searched and searched for best (easiest) way to remove the swingarm bushings on my bike. It looks like this is a difficult process.

I am preparing it to go to the powder coaters. What is the best way to remove the inards? Are there any tools that make this easier. Does anyone have pics of the step-by-step process?

I don't want to damage anything in the process. I assume that once they are out some of the parts will need to be replaced. What parts should I be ordering? Where is best place to get them?

Thanks in advance.

Get an internal expanding pipe remover at Ace Hardware. I bought this one for around $6. Made short work of bushing removal on my 500.

Stu,

Thanks for the response. I tried searching on line and couldnt find it. Do you know the exact name of it or manufacturer? Once you fit it in I assume you tapped it out from the other end?

It's called a pipe nipple extractor. The one I bought measures about 3/4" on the knurled part. Fully expanded, it's 1". Any place that carries plumbing supplies and tools should have them.
Turn it with a wrench till it tightens in the bushing and the bushing starts rotating, then continue turning while exerting outward pressure with the wrench. It'll spin out. If your bushings are the plastic type, it should be really easy. Mine are bronze, and I had to heat the tube before they'd break free.

Thanks. I see Lowes and HD carry them also. Will swing by and pick one up tomorrow.

Thats one way, check tips section, you can make a tool out of old valve shim etc and drive them out.You can also use that tool to remove frozen pistons in brake calipers, open ones like DOHC Hondas. Bill
