David Silver Spares or CMS Exhaust
« on: May 30, 2006, 08:17:19 AM »
Hello everyone,

Has anyone recently purchased new CB750 exhaust? The prices from David Silver and CMS are pretty close and I am looking for some feedback about purchasing from them. Is either one easier to work with? Since they are in different countries does one have any advantage over the other regarding the shipping charges and delivery time? I see where the value added tax is not applicable to orders to the US but what about duties?

Thanks in advance,
Dennis

Hi,Dennis...
I bought a full system (heat shields, bolts, etc) for my '74 CB750 last fall from CMS. It was very trouble free, came promptly and was less than anyone else. Frankly,I was surprised how trouble-free and fast it actually was. There was no duty charge at all,as I recall.
Regards,Tim

Thanks Tim,

Do the mufflers come with the baffle end covers, or "diffusers" as CMS calls them? Or do they need to be ordered separately?

Thanks,
Dennis

Why not try a domestic supplier? Honda still sells them. I ordered a set from:

https://www.servicehonda.com/

Oh, and they do come with baffles/diffusers.

You'll have to have the part numbers - try here http://www.crotchrocket.com/fiche_select.asp to get them.

The Service Honda site can be finicky - keep clicking on the "interactive pricing page" at the bottom of the page or call them directly.

If you havent got originals already you will need the fittings as well and as i remember Dave Silver does a complete "Kit" with everything you need
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Thanks for the tip. I checked them out and placed an order. I haven't received the confirmation yet so I don't know what I'm in for as far as shipping and tax. The exhaust system was a little more than CMS or David Silver Spares but I found their prices on an air filter, points set, and fork seals better than anyone else so I ordered those too.

My bike still has the original down pipes on it along with slip on mufflers so the fittings on the engine are still there. I ordered everything from there back including the clamps....mine are a bit rusty.

Can you give me a quick brief on installing them? The NOS mufflers appear to mount on the frame over the buddy peg mounting standoff/tube that is secured to the frame with a long bolt. Seems there should be some (rubber?) bushings, sleeves, or thrust washers that insulate the mounts on the muffler from the bike. A metal-to-metal attachment doesn't seem right. Unfortunately I don't know anyone who has a Honda with original pipes for me to look at.

Thanks,
Dennis

Weatherman,

Who did you finally order from? Just curious.

Dennis - I've just put new exhausts on my K2 750 and it's just the bolt, steel washer and nut - no rubbers. I believe that was the factory way. Doesn't present any problems in operation.
You'll love the new look too - really gave my bike a lift!
Cheers

There is a spring washer between the nut on the inside and the flat washer.

Hi Bob,

Ordered them from Service Honda. Mufflers, clamps, heat shields, upper/lower pipe connector tubes & clamps, bumpers for the kickstand, and screws and washers for the clamps & heat shields. The interactive pricing page worked just fine. I also ordered an air filter, fork seals, points set, and a new holder for the owners manual under the seat. These were cheaper than I have found anywhere else

I also ordered mine direct from Honda through a local dealer. Since I'm in there so often, they gave me a 10% discount - still not cheap, but I was aiming for 100% original. Mine came with baffles installed [300 series - not sure about 341's], but did not include the heat shields, connector tubes (goes between upper & lower muffler), kick stand bumpers, or clamps. These I got separately.

Installation was simple & straight forward. On the left (shifter) side, I installed the inside pipe first and then the outer one. On the other side, I noted that the brake lever pivot had little-to-no clearance for the top/outside muffler. I managed to get it on after removing the rear brake pedal - but in hindsight, I probably could have put the outside pipe on first and that may have given me room enough to pull that muffler down a bit to get past the brake pivot.

In ordering all the extra exhaust parts, I inadvertently ordered two pair of the muffler bolts (goes through both mufflers & attaches to frame). Anyone in need of these?

I just got a set of 341's from DSS....came in about 10 days and cheaper..including shipping
then anywhere else.  Have ordered a lot from them...very reliable....same Honda OEM parts.
