What's the purpose of the sprocket plate?

You know, the plate that mounts over the sprocket onto the carrier? p/n 41211-392-000 in my case. What's it there for?

It's there to prevent the chain from jamming the wheel in the event that it jumps the sprocket.
At least that's the theory.

I think its there to help hold the chain up  as you guide wheel out the backdoor of the swingarm. When the swingarm is assembled with wheekl chain cant g.et to the plate without sawing thru the shock

Yeah, if I end up getting this offset CycleX rear sprocket that all chrome and whatnot I'd want to show it off! Thanks for the responses.
