Seriously, the look of the Bomber Tank on the SOHC4 engine is just DYNOMITE!  So beefy!  Honda should have made this bike from the factory.

love the bike man!  this is the bike that has inspired me to built mine..need a favor though. share your secret to the swingarm swap   it wont just swap out will it? does it need machining? i have a 75 cb750f and a 82 750 parts bike.. any ideas?

thanks for all the compliments guys!!

b-rad, post pics of the 82 swing arm so I can see the pivot end top down. 

basically you just need to make the new swing arm so it has no offset on either side, ie symmetrical.  and then the pivot end needs to match the width of the stock swing arm so it will fit up into your frame at the mounting point.

the inner race of the swing arm will now need to match of the width of the new cut pivot end.  that inner race is hardened steal so you'll need to have a lathe to shorten it the same amount as you took off the swingarm.

the pivot bolt will be bigger on the 82, so you need to bore the mounting holes in the frame to accept the new pivot bolt.

you need to measure for new axel spacers to get the wheel centered.  I had them made...

Use the early wheel and hub (NOT the 82 wheel).

keep the 82 brake stop arm.

keep the stock brake pull rod if you have drum brakes.

you need a longer chain.

this will lower the rear end...so you need to make sure you have enough shock travel clearance.  if not, go to longer shocks.

Love it! The tank fits so well with the rest of the design and the beefy white walls make me think of the old bobbers from the 40's and 50's.

Looking for a cheap rim, as was the OP "BryceGP" on the first page? I SUPPOSE the Harley rims would be somewhat of a good fit for the smaller hub of the GL1000 twin disc or single disc CB hubs, but you can get a pretty good Boranni rim for cheap from Motocicli Veloci Milano in Italia. Dunno about drilling yet, I'm going with custom spokes from Buchanan's on mine, 'cause I wanted big arsed stiff fat spokes on mine, to corner carve a hopefully 1123cc'd DOHC supersport, so I want STIFF wheels etc. But yeah, they'll supply the rims blank, or presumably drilled to suit the CB500 racer they built. They've got some beautiful gear, beautiful repical Bimota stuff at Veloci so I'd say it's a must see anyway.

As is THIS BUILD - GOOD LARD what an awesome bike. ME, I like a two seater, but to each his own. Dunno about the white walled coker tires, you can get those little stick-on white-wall things and put 'em on ANY frickin' tire you want, I figure that's the way to go. Mind you, it's a pretty cool tread on them old cokers. It's just a little bit lame to get hung up on the tread, rather than what the tread DOES - which is stick you to the damned road....  So yeah, makes more sense to go with the radials, keeping in mind the weight loading and NOT going with an over-loaded ... say,, 150/70-17, or 160/60-17 - rather than a 160/60-18 due to the bike's heavy-assed old-school construction. In any case, I figure it's far better to go with a radial but if you're going for an older bias-ply tire, then go with some Avons or Bridgestones, rather than some crazy assed vintage #$%* that came half baked out of the mind of a guy who collects cars for a freakin' MUSEUM, like old man Coker......

All the same, an AWESOME bike right there. Beautiful. Just ... next time save the money on the boutique TIRES, and get a new alloy rim, a fat assed Boranni (a 3.00" x 18" perhaps? Oh YEAH!!!) from the Italians, and worry about the rubber later. After all, if the bike's done right it's gonna outlast more than one set of rubber in the first place. Right?

So I've decided recently that I wanted to install all new electronics...partially because I've wanted to for a while but just didn't get around to it....and partially to solve some idle issues.

1.  Installed Pamco electronic ignition.


2.  Installed new 3.3 ohm coils (with resistor pack to reduce amp draw), 7mm wires, NGK Plug caps, and NGK iridium plugs





3. It all started right up....

Hey, by the way - good job on the Harley Firestone looking rims you got, that's a great one for hooking up to the FRONT hub though I dunno about the fitment on the rear drum hub you've got. Same problem that Kenny Buchanan told you (and reminded me and probably every other twit who phones him - "Hey, would you mind carefully explaining how I can NOT buy your product?" yeah, the Buchanan's guys are pretty great when they help you with the weird stuff. It's pretty un-heard of in the commercial side of things....) but yeah anyway what I wanted to point out to you all is the DOHC-phobia on this forum. So you've got a CB750 and the first bike you think of buying a spare wheel from is the rare cult "classic" (over-#$%*ing-rated, in MY not so humble opinion) GB500 - yeah I suppose all of those guys who've snapped them all up for collections at over-inflated prices will sell you the front wheel, just because. Well #$%* ME has ANYBODY ever heard of the seventy-NINE CB750K???? WTF. It's a single disc hub, but then at least SOMEBODY on your build -the dude who likes the purple metal flake glitter (as do I) knew how to throw together the important parts in the first place. But yeah, though the hub's not a dual (and too bad at that, 'cause the modern floating rotors weigh just as much as the old SOHC GL1000 type riveted up rotor -whereas the DOHC rotors are less than half the weight yet stil they work better - the hub's not a great part to use (unless you ARE going with a single disc in which case go for it - the RIM itself is a 2.5 x 18 AND it's got a classic non drop-center profile. In other words, it looks just like the Sand-Cast rims. Very nice part.

Another great part is the 3.00 x  18" Boranni dimpled shouldered rim, which I'm using up front, with a 4.25 x 18" Sun rim out back, GL1000 hub FZR1000 rotors though I think I'll switch to Brembos or CBR900RR of which one of the three '90s era types fit the GL hub perfectly, or just about - and in the back the KZ1000B aka KZ750B rear hub, with the DOHC front rotor on it -though I'm looking into the first gen comstar front rotors 'cause they're the smallest, so wil work with a mini caliper of the CBR or ZX or GSXR or ETC ETC ETC type of rear rotor, maybe get it milled down to 220mm etc - which is all goin' on a DOHC "7/11" build with a sand-cast aesthetical theme to it.... Enough about the damn BIKE I was talking about the Borrani rim which is available in many many sizes but just one shape ha ha, from Motocicli Veloci Milano, 95 Euros which is about 130 bucks. Cheap shipping too, and the most fantastic bars and rear-sets you've ever freakin' SEEN. Great shop. In any case, I sure hope to blow some minds with the wheels I'm assembling this month for CB-F DOHC as well as KZ440ltd believe it or not ha ha. That build and it's wheels excite me more than the 7/11 just for the odd sizes and tires I wanna use. In any case, you've really gotta shop around for rims just to know what's out there. These wheels I'm building came as whole OEM wheels from fleabay almost two years ago and I've been researching how to do this wheel swap pretty much the whole time since. It's not freakin' cheap though I'll tell ya THAT for nothin'. My original big cost savings idea was to lace up comstar rims, and use the original hubs with halo ring flanges for spokes to hook up to.Thing is, you'd still have to find the special bolts to hole the halo rings to the hubs.

I don't mean to come off sounding like such a #$%*ing snob, and I realize that I probably do. But everybody's gotta get over their DOHC-phobia. The DOHC is a fantastic bike, I dare say superior to the SOHC. I hope to PROVE the point soon enough.

And another thing: The COKER tires really look like ass. Square shouldered heavy and too #$%*ing large in diameter. If you want white walls, you can use Moon customs' "Moon-eyes", all of the classic car buffs do. They're  a white frizbee of rubber that sits next to your tire on the beads. I guess they don't recommend using 'em with radials but I wanna try 'em anyway.

Well it looks like you are creating a "phobia" just so you can hear yourself ramble on. The first DOHC Honda 750 was a big pile of crap, the engines were definitely no where near as reliable as the SOHC's and anyone that has owned both already knows this. The DOHC1100's were fairly good bikes with probably the best of Honda's DOHC engines at that point and  even though i had a nice 900, they still handled like sh1t and really, their brakes weren't that much better. I have owned several SOHC's that handled better. Still, i have no idea of what you were actually on about but being a little more informed may actually help you gain some credibility...

it was relevent in one way i guess...quit frankly after I was done with my AM ruitine...what was in the bowl bore a strong resemblance the DOHC bikes I've seen and rode.

new build commenced yesterday. new thread to come.   

bought a project bike...fresh, no miles, fully rebuilt k1 motor w/ 836 kit...in a K5 frame.  dyna s electronics included, new and in box...air tech tail section, couple of early K tanks.  clip ons.  even came with a spare set of +6" forks.

it'll be fun!!

yeah the write up was done before I bought the tires.  I went with the 400 front and back.   but if I had to do it again...I'd do 400 front (450 won't fit between stock forks) and 450 rear...for a little more grab out back.

use the stock hubs if u can...very easy to lace up new hoops to the front and they bolt right back up to the bike. Call Buchanan Spokes once u have the hoops and they will cut custom spokes for u...expensive but very easy and do a hell of a job.  hit me up with any questions...I'm all ears.
