Rear shocks painted?
« on: June 03, 2006, 10:52:32 AM »
Were the insides of the shock top covers painted black?  I took the shocks apart and after sanding
through several decades of rust, I think I noted black paint on the bare metal.  I can't decide if I
should repaint them before putting the shocks back together.

BTW....a drill press (for force...not drilling  ;D) and a small hand built tool makes an easy way to
compress the springs to remove the hold on clips on the top.

That's exactly what I used...   ;D  Except I just placed them upside down on two pieces of 1/4" plate to compress them...

Mine didn't seem to have any paint inside...but I painted them with gray Rustoleum primer just to inhibit rust...

In years past, I used my bench vise with a 1/2" hole drilled through the rear of the movable jaw...then fastened a piece of angle with a slot cut in it to the bench behind the vise...the sections on either side of the slot were angled...you placed the shock spring in the slotted angle, put a bolt/screwdriver/whatever through the shock bottom mount and the vise jaw protrusion...and tightened the vise to compress the shock spring...

Worked real slick...nowadays,  I can't find the slotted angle...   ::)
