BTW....a drill press (for force...not drilling
) and a small hand built tool makes an easy way to
compress the springs to remove the hold on clips on the top.
That's exactly what I used...

Except I just placed them upside down on two pieces of 1/4" plate to compress them...
Mine didn't seem to have any paint inside...but I painted them with gray Rustoleum primer just to inhibit rust...
In years past, I used my bench vise with a 1/2" hole drilled through the rear of the movable jaw...then fastened a piece of angle with a slot cut in it to the bench behind the vise...the sections on either side of the slot were angled...you placed the shock spring in the slotted angle, put a bolt/screwdriver/whatever through the shock bottom mount and the vise jaw protrusion...and tightened the vise to compress the shock spring...
Worked real slick...nowadays, I can't find the slotted angle...
