Simplified wiring for a 79 CB650-Help!
« on: March 28, 2012, 07:24:21 PM »
Hello everyone,

My names kai, and I just started a build on a 79 cb650. Its my second build, first being an xs650.

So far, I have stripped down the bike, built my seatpan, and started to clean things up. My first big project is wiring. I like to get it out of the way, because electrical is my one peeve about bikes. I hate electrical anything!

So, Ive dont some research, realized there is not a whole hell of alot of info on these bikes. For wiring, my goal is to have as minimal of a harness as possible. The battery will be mounted underneath the rear cowl (cafe, yes) and ill run the wiring underneath the pan.

I want to run basically just a headlight, tail light, signals, electric start (no damn kicker! boo), MAYBE a kill switch (I quite like my XS without it), no speedo, no idiot lights, no tach, etc etc.

Ive found this diagram for a dohc 750, but the colors seem to match up quite nicely to the factory 650 harness.

My question is, Will this diagram work for my bike? Of course, ill need to wire in the lighting, but charging system wise, will it work?

If anyone has some insight on this, wise words, or a different diagram that works better, please tell me. I dont need the factory 650 diagram, I already have it.

Thanks in advance,

Yes, a build of my bike will be posted sooooon. (im too busy wrenching on the damn thing)

There is a guy on ebay who sells diagrams.  I used it to wire three bikes so far and they are great.  Just go to motorcycle parts/asian.  Type in cb550 wiring.  I think it is bellico motorcycles that sells the diagrams.  he has a picture of a honda twin cafe bike restored on the ad.  He charges around 6 bucks and e-mails the diagrams to you within a day.  The diagrams show different variations for what you want to do, simple, race, etc.

There's lots of info on these bikes.  The real wiring diagram is in the manuals section which is accessible from www.sohc4.com.  Just look for the 650 tab at the top.  The electrical system for the 650 is different from other sohc4s but the diagram you're using will likely work.  Keep in mind, the 650 has electronic ignition, so you'll need to use the CDI igniters.  Another thing to remember, if your charging system isn't working you'll need to address that. Fairly frequently the rotor is bad which in turn destroys the regulator/rectifier combo.  Check the rotor first by removing the stator cover on the left side and metering between the slip rings of the rotor.  4-10 ohms is normal, 5 ohms is ideal.  These bikes are like cars in that if the alternator (combination of the rotor and stator) is bad, the bike is running off of the battery, as the battery runs down, spark intensity diminishes until the bike stops running.... You can try to push or jump start it all day long but you won't get s%%t.
As far as no kill switch is concerned, in my opinion it's a terrible idea.  That switch is your first line of defense against a run away motor.   In the time it takes to reach over to the key and turn that off ALOT can happen.
