1979 Cb650... Which carbs will work on her?
« on: June 05, 2006, 09:44:27 PM »
I've got a 79 with 14,000 original miles and had what was a friend rebuild the carbs for me. well, carbs are now toast and need another set of carbs and can't find em.  What other years or bikes will work on it?  I have heard that CB750 carbs will work on it too, but need some expert advice.
Thanks
Ed

79/80 only 650 carbs that will work.  In 81 they went to cv's and the spacing is wider.
550s should fit but need jet change sat least.

The head spacing is different between carbs.....
I don't understand how rebuilding could ruin them.....?
Do you have all the parts for all four and the brackets/screws,etc...
Or did your friend lose the parts....broke them?...?
If ya got all the parts,{not broken} they can be fixed...

If you get stuck  , I might have a set
boxed under the bench in the shop,
send me a message  let me know and I willl look,
been a few years, they were, clean, and in good
             shape,when I boxed them up...
don't even know what they go for now..

but I figured they'd eventually get used...
                     Hope it helps

He was boring out the jets and ended up boring it out 8 sizes too big. And then just said oops, now ya gotta find new carbs.  And with the 79 jets (I'm not sure which) they were pressed in.  If anyone has any ideas on how to replace the ruined jets please let me know.  If ya haven't already figured out, I'm new to wrenching!  So forgive any stupidity that I might say.

The jets can be replaced.  Even press in jets can be extacted and replaces with screw in types.

Talk to the people at www.motorcyclecarbs.com.

    Don't chuck them.......................
That's a minor difficulty,   The newer style slo jets
can be retro fitted to either press, or thread back in.
I sleeve them, {replacements} and just press in
        works like a charm,
                 Hope it helps

OK, cool!  So they're not paper weights!  As stated previously, still a newbie at wrenching.  Now how do I go about replacing the jets?  I don't have any type of pressing device.  Where do I get the slo jet and any idea on a part number?  I like the idea of threading it in, just incase...
Thanks again for the help!!!

The spacing between the intake ports are different on the early and later cylinder heads. The CV carbs won't fit the early head.
It has been tried. 8)
