Oil leak help
« on: April 16, 2012, 02:52:27 PM »
Recently changed oil in my 74 550. Picket up new o-rings thinking that would solve the leak where the filter housing and case come together....nope....still leaking.

Do I have a bigger problem? Am I missing something?

Thanks

Did you use a OEM filter or aftermarket?

Did you change both o-rings?

Changed both o-rings, used an aftermarket filter. Looks exactly like the old filter I pulled out. Could be that the oil leak started when the previous owner used aftermarket parts as well? Could I fix the problem with an o-ring that's a bit thicker?

It shouldn't leak at the filter housing unless the o-ring or the filter casing is cracked or knicked or warped. That's the one place I've never had a leak after quite a few oil changes. And I use aftermarket as well as OEM filters it should have nothing to do with the housing leaking. Can you snap a pic of exactly where it's leaking? Have you tried thoroughly cleaning the area to see where it's leaking from? You might be surprised at the source.

I have heard of some aftermarket filter gaskets to be a bit thin. Find a friend with a used Honda gasket and swap it out. Or go to your dealer and buy a new filter and give it a try.

Well it turns out that the o-ring that came with the new filter was a bit too thin. Really easy fix though. Went to the local NAPA store and picked up another o-ring the same diameter but just a bit thicker, fixed it right up.

Thanks for the help

Glad you got it sorted out. Those aftermarket filters do cause some issues.

you also dont need to do the bolt super tight,it should just compress the ring then a little more.
