Vetter Windjammer III on cb750k1
« on: April 26, 2012, 05:26:23 PM »
I was thinking of getting an old goldwing but I just don't have the room so I'm thinking of turning my cb750k1 into a temporary bagger.  I picked up a windjammer III the other day and already have a very nice set of olympia luggage.  I know there are many that absolutely hate the 750 all dressed up but it has it's place and I plan to do a bit of touring this summer and wind really tires me out.

I can put the luggage on quickly but I haven't tried to fit the windjammer.  Is it possible to use it as a temporary quick fit accessory and take it off when not needed.  I'd like to be able to put it on and take it off in under 90 minutes.  I guess the biggest problem would be the electrical connections but has anyone tried this.

Put mine on for winter and off in summer.
4 bolts and 4 hose clamps and switching headlight is all it takes.

Try it ! You will soon discover why the CB750 was the universal motorcycle. I drag raced, roadraced, citydrove, toured and discovered a unique part of motorcycling history. I put lowers on it (highly recommended) and went on a tour with my buddies who had BMW's,ST's, Goldwings etc. and had a blast. At stops, everyone came to look at mine while ignoring the $20,000 BMW's. It was reliable and comfortable and I never took off the touring stuff. I use it for the occasional tour and cold weather +3 C Edmonton morning commutes.

Do you have to take off the old headlight bucket too?

Very nice bike!  Do the lowers just reflect the cold air or do they channel hot air from the engine onto your legs?  What I mean is how does that black part next to your airbox with the vetter logo work?

The lowers make a nice set. The fairing I got looks to be in great shape but I just don't see myself using it during the peak summer months.  How long did it take you to  put on and do you think it's something that can be used as a temporary accessory?

The original headlight bucket remains after installation of the Vetter since it contains the rats nest of wiring.  Vetter supplied a rubber cover that replaced the light and mounting ring, sort of like a tupperware lid, and just snapped onto the bucket.  When new, you used your bulb and mounting ring in the vetter.   They originally came with a short wiring harness and a bunch of vampire clips.  You used the clips to install the harness inside you headlight bucket and routed out the back.  It was just long enough to reach the socket on the left inside of the fairing.  Check out craigvetter.com under Vetter Fairings for replacement parts and repair kits.   I had a couple of them over the years and just sold my last one about two years ago.  Storage permitting, I would have kept it.

I cut my windshield down about 2" or so (so I could see over it) and it still gives better wind protection than my Goldwing.

I actually ordered some of the pop out vents and installed them in my 01 Goldwing to try and reduce the wings' buffeting, but still the Vetter was better.

Only problem is that mine is buzzy.

My Windjammer uses the stock turn signals.  It does not use the headlight that came with the bike.  To remove it I,
1: unplug the wiring harness.
2: remove the four bolts holding the fairing to the mount and remove the fairing from the bike.
3: remove the turn signals from the fairing and reinstall on the fork ears.  Plug the turn signal wires back into the stock wiring.
4: reinstall the stock headlight in the bucket.

Way less than 90 minutes.  I leave the fairing mount installed.

I used a sabre saw with fine tooth blade. Leave it mounted on bike and protect the area it sits on with masking tape.
Tutn windshield upside down and rub the cut edge with acetone to smooth the edge

Sounds easy.  Good to know that it's possible to have it installed as a temporary item.
