helicoil or longer bolt
« on: April 30, 2012, 10:40:24 AM »
Ok so at the tail end of my top end rebuild on my 74 cb750 I striped one of the cam tower bolts that keeps the rocker ARM shaft in place. I did notice once I took the head back off the bike the striped hole still had some good threads that the bolt couldn't reach, so my question is should i helicoil it our just get a longer bolt.

Any input would be appreciated.

Take the bolt with you when you go to buy the helicoil or when online the bolt size will be listed with the corresponding helicoil and drill size.

Time serts are good too.
You might be able to get them at a local machine shop and save shipping charges.

Most of my local auto parts stores have heli coil kits right on the shelf.  They're pretty easy to do once you've done a couple.  Personally I wold go that route.

If you use a longer bolt and it bottoms out in the hole and you tighten it ,then it will strip that out too. You do not want the bolt to bottom out in the hole.-LUCKY

i had a similar problem.  i measured the depth of the hole using a longer bolt to see when it would bottom out.  There ended up being 8mm more depth that the stock bolt wasn't catching so i got a bolt that was 5mm longer than the stock bolt

From what i measured, the stock bolt only caught 5mm of threading.... but different holes could be different

Ok i got the kit and am putting them in at work. But i got the 4 cam tower bolts and the 4 head bolts mixed up. I think the longer ones with the letter b stamped in the top are the head bolts, am I right?
