Any welder will tell you he can do it. Might do good, might make a mess, might grind it down past where you want it trying to help you. If he overheats it , it may cause a leak.
 So on this one I would try JB or Devcon... make it work till cases come apart.

The ignition cover does not need to be tighten hard, only not fall off and no water enter the inside.

My buddies that were behind me said he twitched once or twice, then was dead as a door nail. The point is, as long as there is enough thread to hold the cover on, it's not an issue. ;)

Something similar happened to my old boss: he was running 65 MPH (in a 55 zone!) on his crotch rocket when a Colorado deer jumped him from the side of Hwy 285 one afternoon. Took my boss clean off the bike, totaled the bike, put him in the hospital for 2 weeks with all sorts of broken things.

He said the deer stopped to look at him laying on the side of the road before walking away. They're big deer out this way, not like those I've seen back East!

I never posted the last look of the JB Weld repair. It will look better after I have painted the cases. Thread work fine, it feels tighter than the not damaged thread.

I`d get it fixed properly, this bike is really worth spending more time and money on. A good welder can fill that up and you can drill and retap. I dropped the case of my K1 and two pieces broke off close to where the damage is on yours. I found a welder nearby and he welded the two pieces back on pretty nicely for $40. My cases were apart

I appreciate all the feedback and ideas in how to repair the broken bolt hole. In time, Id like to get it welded. There are a bunch of ways to fix this, JB weld, epoxy, braze, weld, etc. As of right now I can get the bolt to thread on tight enough to hold the cover on, but been talking with a forum member who knows how to work with this aluminum and is willing to help when the time comes. Just knowing me, Id like to have it welded some day. For now, it'll have to wait.

In the mean time Ive had a lot of bureaucratic fun at the DMV working out some issues titling it in my name. The good news, it should all be straightened out this Saturday and Ill have a title in my name. It was a whole lot easier when I lived in Vermont.

Ive made some slow progress on the bike. Im treating the tank inside and out with Evaporust. Im truly amazed at the stuff and wish Id taken more photos of the tank's inside in the beginning. Ill post some photos when its done, but any crushy brown rust is almost gone leaving behind some nice shiney metal. As it stands, I have no plans to line the tank.

I took the petcock part, which looked terrible. Has the same build up inside as the bottom of the float bowls. How dirty was the fuel used in this bike? Unfortunately the brass tube on the petcock did not survive the years of gas stored in the tank. I have a beat up petcock with a brass tube in good shape. Read on here they are just press fitted in, anyone have luck removing and replacing the tube?

The inside of the tank came out great. Really cleaned up well. I do not plan on lining it. Currently the inside is coated with oil and put away.

As good as the outside of the petcock looked. Im not going to try to fix it. It is heavily clogged and the inside of the petcock body is corroded on the top. I have an extra one in really nice shape that I'll use. Still impressed how clogged the petcock is. Wondering what Ill find in the carbs

Pulled the airbox, very clean inside, no rats nest. Pulling the carbs tomorrow.

Tank look like new inside!
A good stock bike like that will be worth some as stock with all original parts.
The Brier Brown look good too, not as sun burned as many I've seen photos of.

I'm amazed how well the tank came out. Overall the paint is in decent shape, some.minor wear. There is a small dent in one spot but that's ok.

I'm onto the carbs now. Carbs themselves are in great shape, but lots of varnish around the slides. Currently disassembling them and cleaning each part.

With all the downtime I have (can't really work right now), I'm gonna try zinc plating. Everything is ordered, just waiting for it all to come in. Currently prepping the parts while I wait.
