wheels, tires and brakes fit on cb650
« on: April 30, 2012, 02:22:28 AM »
Hi, very new to the forum and this is my first time posting.

I am trying to find information about wheels, tires and brake fitting on cb650 from 1979-81.

I have a 81 CB 650C, with 19" front dual disc brakes, and 16" 130/90 back.  I am just trying to see if I can actually fit the 79' 17" back wheel, which is 130/90 17" without having to change out all the rear brakes and such.

Thanks for all the information.

Welcome to the forum!

Can you clarify a bit?  You're looking to swap wheels without changing brake drums? If you have the brake drum for the '79 wheel, I think you should be able to swap the whole thing as a complete assembly.

It's been a while since I was there, but I think I remember seeing a fitment chart at www.hondacb650.com.

You could also try www.myhondacb650.com.

Yes it will fit no problem.  You can use either drum.  Measure the spacers and see if the 79's are narrower though.  I am running a 79 rear on my 80.

Thanks for letting us know.  I On my '80 CB650, I have spoked wheels with a 17" rear, but my '80 CB650C has the comstars with a 16" rear.  I wasn't sure if the hub was interchangeable.

Jim my reply was more to the OP after reading your post I'm not sure about your swap.  I'm sure it would be the same but the standard models had a diff routing of the brake linkages for some reason.  Havent done that swap but might will be soon.

cb650 - I have no intention of swapping mine.  Just eyeballing it, though, it looked like the brake linkages at the wheel were the same setup.  I can't get to both of them at the moment, so I can't verify that right now.  A '79 rim would be a spoked wheel, and the '81 CB650C should be a comstar, right?

FYI, ahcb650, threads where you're just seeking advice should be posted in the SOHC/4 Bikes section, not the Project Shop.  It's not a huge deal-- nobody's going to take away your birthday or anything, but you'll get more help when you post the right topic in the right area.

No a 79 is a comstar. All they came with in 79. Thats why its a easier swap with a custom.

If that's the case, then ascb650 shouldn't have any trouble then.  I think it's odd that Honda would switch up the size of the rim from '79 to '81, but still keep it the same style.  At any rate, it sounds like the swap should work.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

Basically, my front and back tires have cracks on them, and I am too cheap to pay for $140 for one tire + installation.  I found a set of tires and wheels on ebay for that price, and I can sell my old wheels or trade it for something else.  It started off as a cheap way to get new tires.  But I always want to lower the front forks of the bike, and raise the back a little more with 17" wheels to make it more flat in terms of the body style.  That's why I asked the question.

Thanks for all the replies, you guys are awesome and very helpful.

They switched in 80.  79 is the only year with the 17" reverse comstar. Then in 80 they stared the 17" spoke or 16" comstar
