took a trp from great barrington MA to Burlington, VT. route going to was about 300 miles, trip home was around 190.
electrical system worked fine, no charging issues. uni stock cleaner had been cleaned and re-oiled. oil changed rotella 5-W 40 and filter before trip. synched carbs using vacum gauges night before. I'm running a 4-1 header and a keag aluminium canister.
I have rebuilt the carbs and am running drilled main jets in carbs from a cb550 on my 500. The Main needles are raised as high as they can go. I found the bit that was the correct size for the jets and then used the next available larger size to drill out the mains. The result is an engine that runs very strong through the first three gears, but flattens out around 70-75 mph in fourth, usually giving no real accereration in fifth.
engine would surge at speed, accelerating between 60-65 mph when throttle was held still every five seconds or so. I would often have to downshift a gear to raise rpms. this would allow me to actually accererate in top gear, otherwise any degree of grade would cause me to decellerate slightly.
I adjusted my clutch cable before the return trip, but must have had it too tight- right before I would shift gears the engine would race as if I had already depressed the clutch. loosened the cable a little and the revving out of gear thing calmed down.
I rebuilt my front caliper and replaced pads last summer. no issues with the system until this trip. the brakes have always squeaked, but on the return trip, a squeeze of the brake meant a residual squeeze on the rotor--the caliper would loosen but only after a few tenths of a mile. I'm assuming the puck is stuck or jamming, so another rebuild is in the works.
I was riding with my friend with the R6 Yamaha, so the scenery didn't change much, although in the among all of the issues I listed above, there were times when I was following or leading at 80 mph...
any suggestions about resolutions to any of the above issues or experience with them that someone can relate would be appreciated.
