RE: How much is a 1975 CB750 Running Engine Worth?
« on: June 02, 2012, 09:47:57 AM »
Hi Guys,

Not sure where to post this question, but am wondering how much a 1975 CB750 engine with 9,500 miles is worth?  Some typical oil spots at head and cylinders, but not big leaks.  Runs Strong with good compression.  I would like to sell this one and get a KO engine.

Thanks!

I would say somewhere between $500 - 700. Just depends how long you want to wait out a high offer. The thing about motors are they can be expensive to ship. That kills the deal for me, as I would love to have a running spare motor.

Then you have to convince the buyer that it is in good enough shape to warrant that $$. Only way to prove that is fire it up. Are we buying a pig in a poke?! (anyone know what that means besides us old geezers?!)

What about a video of it running in the bike?  Bike goes up and down the road.  Would really like a KO as they have much more power.  It would be for a custom project.  The 75 has already been modified with extended forks and "special wiring"

A poke is old english for a bag or sack. A pig in a poke is an expression for do we really know what's in the bag?

Wanna trade a running K5 for a non running K0?  Is that even fair?

It is possible to develop 65+ HP in the K5, which would be easier, IMO. All you need do is bore it one step, and maybe find a final drive cluster from a K0-K2 (single row output bearing) or make a spacer on the existing final drive shaft and swap out the bearing to single row, and get a different cam. The Megacycle 125-00 would help, being a little bit more than a K0 cam, or maybe find a K0 or K1 cam, they are around. Then jet up the carbs to match, like maybe the 115 mainjet, and get the same pipes (HM300). Polish the valves (at least the intake valves) and maybe a bit of porting work on the intakes (although the K5 is usually pretty good already in this regard). This combo should tick up over 70 HP in the end.

Or, make the K5 into an 836 (not the best option for touring, though) and bump it nearer 80 HP.

Wow!  80 HP sound like a ground pounding monster!  I could go for that.  Thanks for the tip on the megacycle cam if it's close to a KO that is what I am looking for! Is hard to believe a bearing would impact HP that negatively.  I already have a 72 that has been waiting in the wings for some time. Maybe I should sell the latter models 75 or 76 and focus on the 72 with your build suggestions?  I don't want to end up in a 12 step program if you know what I mean.

In case anyone is curious here is my original inspiration for wanting to sell my engine and get this KO setup VIDEO0023.3gp  $450 engine, carbs, custom oil tank and Gerex ignition.
