Rubber Coating on Cable Stays
« on: June 08, 2012, 04:18:55 PM »
I was thinking about powder coating this mounting plate for the fuse box, regulator, etc. I think there is another piece I have that also has one of these incorporated rubber coating cable stays.  I am assuming the 400 degree heat needed for powder coating is going to melt this rubber and I will need to remove before powder coating.

So my question is has anyone found a good way to replace this rubber?  How about something like this stuff in a can that you would dip the handle of a screw drive or pliers into in order to rubberize the handle.  Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm doing the powder coat myself.  I just pulled my 1st batch of parts, mostly foot peg mounts out of the oven this afternoon and they turned out pretty good, not such a difficult process after all.

Yep, you could buy some liquid "Plastic Dip" to do those bits, that's what Honda did. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thanks Terry - seemed like the thing to do but often times what seems obvious may have a downside but in this case it seems it will work.  I went to the manufactures web site, here called Plasti Dip http://www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Plasti_Dip and they say you can put on multiple coats to increase the thickness.  Should work fine!

No worries mate, and thanks for the link, I see there's a clear now, so you can dip your levers in clear, then the "knobs" on the end in black. (or red, blue, green etc........) Cheers, Terry. ;D
