Need advice on frame
« on: May 27, 2012, 03:23:33 PM »
Finally got the bike titled, and the motor out.  Now I want to go to powdercoat.

Do the rings inside the neck need to come out before I send it?  I ordered new bearings from allballs.

Those will come out to put in your roller bearings. So you can either take them out and tape the area off or leave them in and have to pry them out through the PC. I would pop them out and make sure they were tapped off.

Before you build up the bike, rebuild the engine.

Then with the engine rebuilt you can just lower the frame over the engine and make the job very easy.

I do have to throw this out there, even if it is obvious. Be careful with the powder coat if it chip it's will keep peelin and chipping, maybe throw some painters tape or something over the tubing when you install. And duct tape isn't a good idea for that trust me :(

Painters tape comes in various strengths. I suggest using the lowest strength for ease of removal and cleanup.

I can see where duct tape would leave a gooey mess, besides being hard to remove.

I asked my powdercoaters about chips and edges starting to peel. He said that if its done right, every molecule of the PC is adhered to the frame. so a chip or an edge shouldn't make any difference, it should still stick.

Now I don'tbelieve that 100%, but it did give me confidence that a chip or an edge should have more staying power than i thought.

Just trying to get a roller, I feel pretty safe about protecting the powder coat.  I need to learn about the motor, I've been reading a ton but don't have the nerve to jump in yet.  Top end build, for sure.  Going mostly stock, as I have most of the parts.

+1   should do this first before building up the bike
