Im trying to wrap up my first CB500 Four - 73 build. I have all the wiring down (I think). Starter to ground / coil. Coil to + battery / ground. When I connect the + wire to the battery, the starter kicks in. I can't stop it. Any ideas? Sorry for the simple question, but as I said, this is my first build.

Did you toss the "superfluous" starter solenoid/relay?

What wire diagram are you using?

I'm using the diagram on this site. What do you mean by tossing the solenoid?

Is this a stock wiring set up ? The starter is already grounded in the case. The starter wire from the starter goes on the left post of the selenoid. The battery + cable goes to the opposite post on the selenoid. Battery - goes from post to the upper rear engine mount on the foot brake side. there is no other wire that goes on the neg post. If that all looks right check your button, maybe stuck.

I don't know what you mean by "build".  To many it means to strip down and modify the bike so it is far from stock configuration.

Unless you tell us what your bike still has, we won't know if you still have the stock components.

The stock bike has a solenoid, which is where the starter motor wire attaches. The battery connects to the other post on the solenoid.

It is the solenoid that should connect the starter motor to the battery when commanded.

If you are connecting the starter motor directly to the battery, then of course it is going to operate when connected.

FYI, there are about 12 wire diagrams on the this site.

Thanks for the input. I just sat down and pulled and replaced every wire. I used the diagram from Oldmanhonda. I've added a photo now so you can see the bike. It's a `73 Cb500 Four. I cut out all the electrical mounts and made a new box that mounts under the seat - rebuilt the entire engine - re built the carbs (not in my photo at this time. I built a headlight (at the paint shop right now). I'm now going through the carb tune process. With a CAM 4 into one and pod filters, I'm starting the rejet process at 125 main jet.

As you can tell, I've learned a lot in the last few weeks, thanks to all the help from the forum! Hopefully I will be able to help others moving forward.

I'm ready for my next project now! - Next time I'll start with a bike that runs when I buy it!

Thx again!
