Wooden wedge is what I use.  Pushing the caliper piston in pushes fluid up to the master cylinder reservoir.
However, usually I push the piston back while the caliper is still over the rotor before removing the rotor or caliper.  It's a plan ahead thing.

Upon reading a little more a tire iron with some slow and steady pressure seems to work well for most......

I use a tire iron. Its flat, thick, and has some strength.  Then slide some cardboard in to hold it there.  Keep it clean whatever you use. No grease or human oil on the pads.

As TT says, do it while still on the bike if possible. Push the caliper into the rotor, to push the A pad into the caliper, remove and stuff with cardboard.

It will be tough to do off the bike, but doable. Prying on it can cock the pad and make it harder. Wooden wedge shims from both sides to the center would keep it from cocking.

C clamp is really easy. Keep the master cylinder open on top, have a towel wrapped around it to catch flying fluid. Then proceed to bleed.

Or just loosen the two bolts holding the caliper, when the wheel is back in, retighten.
