K2 Float Setting
« on: June 22, 2006, 10:18:38 AM »
First, let me say hi. I am a new member. I spent the better part of yesterday reading the forums section and was very impressed. I would be hard pressed to find a better organization to be a part of.

My questions are:
 1) What should I set the floats at in my K2? I ride the bike at an altitude of 3200 ft. above sea level and the carbs have 125 mains. My confusion stems from the lack of info given by the manuals, both ( Clymer and Haynes ). I set the floats at 1.023" from the "lip" of the main body and now I can't get enough fuel at part and wide open throttle. Very frustrating!! I can move the floats to a position that will allow for more fuel flow but that goes against the service recommendations. Stock pipes, carbs and the sync. is good.

2) The only info I can find on the choke setting is in the Haynes at .020" gap across the bottoms and with that setting I can't get it to idle below 1500. I understand that I must get the carbs set first. But is this really the only info available?

Thanks in advance and I look forward to future discussions within this forum.

As it happens, I'm setting my K2 floats tonite!

I'll post back to here tomorrow with some data.
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

If they are brass, I think float height is 26mm.

Well folks, as I was waiting for some info about setting my floats I read a forum from Glenn Stauffer about checking into past topics, FAQs, and I must admit right there where he said it was. The perfect info for rebuilding and setting my carbs. http://www.salocal.com/sohc/tech/carb/carb.html  I want to say that since I joined, 2 days ago, I have done more for my bike, in that time, than in the last 6 years that I've owned it. This club is "great". Thanks all and thanks Glenn.

1.) CB750K2: Plastic floats set at 26.0mm from gasket surface (without gasket) to top of float, inverted carbs.
2.) Choke won't raise idle on the CB750K2. It's for starting only, and the idle speed is up to your right hand.

Is 26 mm correct for the earlier brass floats as well? The manuals say so, but I had to set mine differently to stop overflow.

I used to have to add +1.5mm to the brass ones after they get caked with minerals, making them 27.0-27.5.  The real problem isn't with the floats, but that the mass of the floats, especially when dirty, causes slight gooves to develop in the little posts where the pivot rod is supported. These little grooves tend to make the floats stick when the bike is sidestanded, particularly.

A tiny file will smooth off those ridges (look close to find them, don't file much), and smooth off the now-sharp edges of the rotating float "bearing", as well. Then, you might get away with the 26mm setting again. And, make sure they haven't accumulated any internal fluid. They sometimes would condense water inside, just a drop or so. You can hear it splash if you shake it in a real quiet room and listen close, then you have to drill a tiny hole, heat the float (like on an iron) for about 15-20 minutes, then cool it and resolder. That's the only way I could reliably dry the brass ones out.

Mine developed a pinhole (several?) and had gas inside.  :o  Took me
a while to figure that one out.

BTW...for Bob... I now have several good brass floats and, with one
of the "new" style, I can now compare the depth that they each sink.
I will have to concoct a setup first

Thanks for remembering. I would be interested in the results.
