cam chain wont turn the engine?
« on: January 17, 2013, 01:22:58 PM »
Ok so Im gonna try to word this as specifically yet unconfusingly as possible. I dropped the cam chain into the engine while i was reinstalling my head today and while i was pulling it back up it started skipping teeth which made it possible to just pull forward without it engaging the engine (this is before i had the cam and sprocket in). Now the engine will engage when i hand crank it backwards but nothing but the oil pump when i kick start it or crank it forwards. Any advice solutions?? Thank you.

I really don't know what you're saying happened but you still have the motor apart I assume? Try to get it back on the crank gear it shouldn't be too hard to maneuver it around from up above and make it get back on the gear. I recall doing this myself

Thank you. That sounds like exactly what happened. Now the question is can I do this from above the head? Because I already torqued it on...

if the cam chain didn't fall down in there and you still have it just try to work it back on the gear. give it some slack and center it up until you feel it grabbed the teeth

Ok still confused. Bare with me thru this weak explanation of what's happening. The chain feels like its on the gear. If I hand crank it forward, it moves the chain but it doesn't make any sound. For instance if I move it backwards it makes that cranking sound like its trying to start. Also, if I pull on it in the forward direction hard enough it will skip up one link at a time? Could it have to so with the tensioner.

NO, if you turn the engine backwards the starter clutch engages
