Questions about Simple Green
« on: August 01, 2012, 08:09:20 PM »
Hey guys, I need to clean a bunch of parts on my bike so I went out to Home Depot and bought a gallon of Simple Green for the first time, it was on sale for about 9USD. I mixed it with 3.5 US Gallons of water and it cleaned out my oil pan quite satisfactorily, but I was wondering, my carbs are completely stuck can I just take the float bowl and top cover off and shove the whole assembly in my 5 gallon pale?

Sure you can, here's a link to a simple green cleaning I just did. Make sure you rinse all of it off when your done. I start with simple green and then use carb cleaner in a spray can and compressed air, always have had sucess with it.

Thanks! I wanted to make sure before I stuck it in there and it ate all the rubber or something.

Sure you can do that, but you really need to get the emulsifier tube out of the carb body to clean its orifices thoroughly.

Yes, but if a float pin falls out, good luck finding one.

I love Simple Green, but it can darken aluminum alloy parts if you let them sit too long in the SG.  An ultrasonic cleaner is a great way to do,a terrific carb cleaning in SG and you only need about 30 minutes immersed.

Thanks for all the responses, All I am trying to do is free them up so I can disassemble them.

Some members have had success in boiling parts in SG.

You mean the slides are stuck?  Use a heat gun on the carb body where the slide bores are, and "worry" the throttle shaft.  That will get them moving.

A little acetone on the slides will soften and remove the varnish as quick as a flash.

I've soaked carbs overnight in Simple Green and been very unhappy with the change in colour of the carb bodies. Soda blasting got most of the dark grey off but what a pain. I've since soaked carbs in full strenght Pine Sol with much better results. They came out cleaner and kept the same nice colour. If your leaving the carbs on the rack the Pine Sol will attack the steel if you leave them in too long. Cliff.

I've switched from SG to pure vinegar in my ultrasonic for aluminum. It's mildly acetic and with the ultrasonic heater on, is very effective at dissolving grease. I also had black carbs from soaking in SG overnight.

Don't leave anything in SG long term. I left some metal carb parts in for a few weeks by accident and they are worse now than before (everything is a dull grey)

I pulled everything out and they didn't change color, but they are still stuck (as in the throttle cam will not turn to open them up). I will try the heat gun and the acetone methods. Thanks for the tips!
