Topic: Worth the asking price??

Hi,

New member, been wanting to get an older CB to restore or make cafe. I found this 72 CB750 locally and owner wants $600. It appears to be missing headlight, carbs, exhaust, side covers...most would be replaced or removed anyways.

Do the experts here think it is worth that even if he does not have the missing parts??

The tank looks really beat up. Looks also like the main wiring harness is missing? Does it have a title? Does the engine turn over by hand? If so, I'd try talking him down some, since ALL the big money items are missing or damage (seat tank side covers and exhaust).

That's not a 72.  You can tell from the shape of the oil tank and you can see it has disc brakes in the rear.  It is a supersport (didn't make those til 75), the seat/cowl is supersport.  Looks like a 77-78 supersport and I believe I can also see the 77-78 light cluster between the tach and speedo.  Does not look like the proper tank--they probably put an earlier tank on whatever year it actually is.  I would look at the manufacturer plate to see what it really is.  I think the previous poster asked whether or not it is titled or not.  That is a huge factor. 

Dimitri13 is right--all the cosmetic expensive pieces are gone.  Then you add in that the carbs are gone.  Assuming it is titled, and the engine turns over, around these parts I pay about 200-300 for a bike like that.  It is not worth $600.  Prices vary geographically though.  There is also more demadn for an early K model, at least pre 77-78.  Hopefully you at least have some bargaining chips now if you go and talk to the guy.

The owner claims it has clear title, so I will see when I take a look tonight. Appreciate the information as it will be very useful "bargaining" chips.

Mind letting us know what state you're in? That'd give us a little better gauge as to what a fair price would be.

That bike in CA would be more expensive than in say, OK.

Pass on that POS. haris is spot on oil tank shows as a "newer" cb. What state are you in?

I just got back, it is a POS. It was a 76, tank was not original, motor was free but he had no carbs, headlight and the main harness was fried from sitting out in the elements.

When he went to look for the title to verify the year he couuld not find and found one for a 72 CB that he "parted out". I told him basically I was paying for the frame and motor and said I would pay $200 for those parts but I would need the title...I walked.

I am in Phoenix BTW, sorry I should have noted that earlier.

Phoenix eh, down in Tucson here!  I had a guy drive down and buy 2 cb550s from me the other month.  I pick and sell a lot of bikes.  I have a few bikes if you can't find something up there.  It's a bigger market up there and the good deals get snatched up within minutes of hitting craigslist.  Also, prices seem a little higher up there.  You are looking for a 750?

Yeah been looking for a few months and haven't found a suitable candidate. I would prefer a 750, but I am fairly open to a 500 or something.

They do go fast, I have a few I was going to buy but by the time I got there they were gone.
 
PM me what you have, I am leaving town for a few weeks (2k miles on the VFR) but when I get back if you have something interesting I could head down to tucson.
