Chrome Verses Chrome Powder Coat
« on: August 10, 2012, 08:23:35 AM »
I searched and could not find a response to this specific question

I am old school and back in the day it seemed to me it was relatively inexpensive to get parts chromed so when I started my resto I was apparently thinking not enough for chrome.  I guess with EPA and the amount of hazardous chemicals that come as a result of the chroming process these prices have gone up significantly.

I went out last weekend and start assembling a box of parts to take to the chrome shop to see what they were going to want for the job.  I kinda had this "A" list and "B" list, A list would be parts I would absolutely get chromed i.e. stock headers/collector (F model here), and B list parts like maybe I could live with them if the price was to high or purchase aftermarket.  I'm going for a stock look and not wanting to change the color of previously chromed parts.

Anyway I did get the Eastwood entry level powder coat system and have done most of the black parts, polished all of the side covers and clear powdered the cases with good results.  Eastwood does offer chrome powders and then recommends clear coating the chrome powder for best results.  I did a couple of multi-coat powders - like the HONDA on the alternator in black and the cases clear coated and with the entry level, single voltage powder gun its a little tricky getting the 2nd layer of powder into all the right places.  Maybe the dual-voltage unit would have been better, especially with the chrome powder and the need for a 2nd layer of clear over the entire part after chrome.

So I am wondering if anyone has tried "chroming" a chrome part with powder and what the results where?  I have not taken the box to the chrome shop so I'm not suffering from sticker shock yet, but from reading on the forum it would appear that powder is going to be cheaper then chrome.

In any case I realize, or at least I think, that I could not powder chrome the headers, THAT I would have to re-chrome.

Your thoughts and opinions as always are appreciated!!

I do not think you can powder coat the headers because powder coat gets baked at 350º and the headers near the engine would exceed that temperature .

Good info about the duel voltage options and clear coat.

I think you would have to ceramic coat headers. Available in different finishes but not sure if any are faux-chrome in appearance. I know there is black, silver, etc.

Been searching Google. Plenty of places showing off the chrome powder. Black chrome powder too.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I spoke recently with a guy who does the powder and ceramic coats and he said that the headers would need to be ceramic coated. They did offer a ceramic that was silver and looked very much like polished aluminum, but I wouldn't say it had the same shine to it that chrome offers. It was nice looking, but also very expensive. While he didn't give me an exact number he indicated several times the cost of a typical powder job.

Yes as mentioned in my original post I was sure I could not do the headers, I was just wondering about everything else?

Has anyone ever done this?  What was your experience when it comes to the look of the powder chrome verses actual chrome?

An example would be the engine guards - I purchased a set from a forum member were the chrome was peeling off, but otherwise structurally sound so I was thinking I could grind, sand, wire brush the peeling chrome off and then powder chrome them.

Has anyone ever done anything like that?

I would think that engine guards would be perfect to experiment on! They are optional bolt-ons anyway, and just about anything looks better than peeling chrome.  8)

Regarding your header and muffler, were you able to find a place that would chrome them?
I thought most places don't touch exhausts because they don't what the carbon to contaminate their stuff (baths?).

I also have a couple F exhaust systems that I would really like to get re-chromed.

A few years back I recall reading of of a new "chrome" process that didn't use the traditional method of applying chrome.  I just did a search - maybe something like this would work: Vacuum metalizing - http://muellercorp.com/coatings.php
but I'm not sure how much that would cost or how durable that is.

Please report back to us on your progress.  I would also like to find a cost effective way to restore our stock exhausts to their original condition.

Yes I was afraid the chrome shop would tell me no on the headers/collector, but I thought I would ask, I'll let you know what they say.

Sounds like no one has done this before (chrome powder) so I guess I can give it a shot on the case guards!
