« on: August 24, 2012, 10:25:23 PM »
Hello
Does anyone know of a 35mm triple tree that is close to 9' center to center over the stock cb550"s 7.25 center to center
It looks like I could do a mid glide tree set but I heard tat the top tree is tappered. any harley guys confirm that?
its for a project 550 im working on. wanting to ride a 130/140 90 16 up front
thanks Paul

not positive about this but just the other day I noticed my garage mate's ironhead sportster top triple had no tube clamps.  I asked him about this and he said that it is a tapered fit...so sounds like that may be a common Harley practice
If it works good, it looks good...

If you are wanting WIDER forks ,you could change over to an early Goldwing(75/76) but use the total frontend/trip trees/fork tubes/wheel assy/brakes. This give you the addition of DUAL disc front brakes. I'm ALMOST positive the tree stem will fit right in but you'll need to change bearing and races!!
This swap is real common in the CB750 chopper world!!

thanks for the reply guys.
I want to use the stock 550 forks, I am using a cb450 front shoe hub laced to a harley 16x3. So thinking If I could find a 35mm triple tree that was wide it would allow for a wider tire,
Do yo think if I did end up going with the mid glide front end had the top tree machined through to 35mm taking the tappered awayan drilling an tapping for a top pinch bolt that would work?
thanks again

no idea on that...seems like a lot of work for a wide tire

The other way you can do it, is make top plugs for your forks with the taper on them, with a smaller filler, or HD style cap.

There may not be room to slit & clamp..unless you slit internally...

Thanks again for the replies. believe it or not a 16x3 drop center laced to a cb450 hub running a 130/90 16 tire will fit. had to make a couple spcers for the axle bolt but it works. snap a couple pics if any interest
thanks Paul

here a link to some of the pictures of the front tire . front was easy back needed to find a 20mm drill to open the slots for the axle bolt need to make a couple wheel spacers, need to get a swingarm pivot bolt machined  needed to drillout hole for to 16mm for pivot bolt.
