Hey all, due to disastrous head leaks and several stripped bolts in my head, I'm having to winter my bike a little early this year and plan for the work I'm going to do. First things first, I'm having my head rebuilt and while I'm doing that, I'm considering having it ported, and then trying to find a '79 650 cam to run it a little bit hotter. right now I have the '82 CV carbs on my bike, but I'm tired of the technical niggles and complicated tuning of these carbs. I've heard the boots on the CB650 engine will fit any of the SOHC 550, 650 or 750 carb sets, so I'm thinking of either
a) buying a set of '79 mechanical carbs to rebuild and tune with pods
b) porting my head and then running late-'70s 750 mechanical carbs with pods for more performance or
c) fully rebuilding my current carbs and keeping the stock setup.
Honestly, the more I think about it, a or b seems like less work for more performance. Would the 750 carbs be necessary with a ported head or would I be badly over-carbing the bike? is there a real benefit to running simpler carbs with pods? I know the '79 650 was running stock about 5 HP more than the '82, I'd love to see if I can get some of that back and then add to it for less than $400 or so (not really looking to buy new CR carbs or a full CycleX 2 to 4 intake kit, though those would be sweet)
thoughts? anyone done this and have pros/cons to offer?
