oki mps-200 repair
« on: June 28, 2006, 11:52:27 PM »
my little mps-200 (spark ignitor) was dripping a black goo, it is still tacky after a long time off the bike. what would be the best method to clean out this #$%*e so I can get my busy little hands in there to try and make a repair?

WTF is an MPS-200 Spark Ignitor mate?  ???
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I believe it is a form/brand of electronic ignition.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

if its liquid BE VERY CAREFULL some of the potting compounds revert to a very nast acid that eats bone when heated above a certain level--dont ask i dont know. There were some scares a few years ago about the gunge from seals etc in burnt out wrecks and i believe there was one case somewhere in the world where an arm had to amputated to stop the bone rot. PS it goes straight through the skin and flesh leaving no mark!

DusterDude...
You are probably familiar with the OOZING potting material...the old Chrysler ignition modules eventually do that....
Gooey mess runs down the firewall....ignition still works fine though.
I've cleaned it up on my 72 with on ill effects...sticky mess though.

sorry, it is the ignition ignitor on a CB650. I was considering putting it in the oven and slowly heating it but I think I might pass on that one now.

You have got two of those OKI CDI units don't you?
As far as I know, when the black stuff starts to melt down it is because they are overheating. And when that happens, they are starting to get bad. These units was also used on the the CX500/650 and the early 80's CB750/900, and some Gold Wing models with an electronic ignition.

OK folks, further to my previous doom laden reply, i went back and did some checking, the real nasty stuff comes mostly from high temerature burning of synthetic rubbers (Neoprene?) as used in seals and rubber? brake hoses also some of the components on a circuit board can degrade in a fire to give off the same thing SO perhaps it aint the "potting" compound that is the problem BUT if its got hot enough to melt it what about the components and who the hell wants to risk it anyway!! Also it only happened to ONE person WORLDWIDE but again I dont want to risk it!!!!

So the word is be VERY careful when dealing with a burntout vehicle ---- just like i am gonna be with No 36
