Wind noise in your lid... annoying?
« on: September 22, 2012, 10:23:30 PM »
So both my lids ( helmets ) are pretty well used by now and while still comfortable and a good fit they both have lost the tight fit around the ears and so produce  a lot of wind noise .
Anyone try to pad behind the lining to improve this ? I really can't tolerate foam ear buds in my ears and have tried earphones with music to drown-out the rushing wind but still find them uncomfortable in my ears.... thoughts ?

i use cotton wool in my ears on longer rides,i find those proper industrial plugs too noise suppressing and i dont like it,they also feel wrong in your ears, cotton wool is soft but takes the edge of noise.

people who ride bikes with music in their ears arent concentrating!!!!!

Agreed Dave !,,, actually found music distracting... but then were 'old geezers' and weren't born with ear phones in our ears like the kids have now 24/7  ;)... so not for me either.. :D

Sealing off the neck area on the helmet will many times cut out a lot of noise.

Over time the styrene foam liner (attached to the shell) compresses. When this happens the fit becomes loose and , more importantly, it looses its effectiveness at absorbing impact in the event of a crash, with obvious consequences. I replace my helmets about every 2-5 years. I think its time you got new helmets.

+1 krusty. I think if a helmet is loose it is best kept in the cupboard. Not only would it not perform when needed, it would be likely to fly off during an accident.
Best to get a new lid spanner.
My new Shoei is really comfy, light and reasonably quiet.

I find it annoying when it sets up a beat with the ringing of my "Tiinnitis".   ::) :)

I like a little music on a long ride, been reluctant to pay for a set of custom fit earphones but I have a nice set of Skull Candy ear buds that are pretty good at deadening the wind when I ride.  Comfortable for long rides and I can tell when someone is trying to contact me, although I can't answer the call.

I've seen something you can buy that stretches over the bottom of the helmet and fits more tightly to your neck that apparently works very well for wind noise and to keep your head warmer when its cold cold outside. Maybe someone else knows whats this is called or where to find it.

I've seen them too, I always go looking for one at the begining of winter but so far I haven't been able to find a source for them.

Have you tried any combination of closed vents? I find that if I close the back two sets of vents (on my Shoei RF1100), it practically eliminates wind noise below about 80mph.

I've learned to get used to earplugs over the last several months.  Now I hardly ever ride without them.  Have you tried the DIY molded in ear type of plugs?  They aren't as good as the custom jobs you can have made, but they are cheap at $15.  I got mine at gander mountain and I would guess you can get them at most gun shops.

I have always used a full-face helmet with no visor. Sounds odd but the noise comes from the rear & sides of the helmet, not the front. I've sealed them at the collar with various devices over the years and it gets much better. Can't say about open-face helmets I know why you would even bother to wear one? The hands and face seem to always hit first. Ouch!
