If it ain’t broke....
« on: July 04, 2006, 10:18:28 AM »
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!  A few weeks ago, I disassembled and cleaned up my carbs (’78 CB750 on a ’72 CB750).  I did this because I was having slight idling issues, they were very minor and could have been lived with…. Anyway, I decided to clean the carbs and rebuild them if they needed it.  After cleaning and reassembly, I put them back on.  Now I have even more idle issues and even a loss of power!

My top ten frustrations....

1) I can’t seem to get the throttle cables adjusted correctly, nor the choke cable.
2) I think that I am getting some fuel starvation through the fuel line.
3) I hope that I don’t have a manifold leak.
4) I am sure the carbs need to be synched.
5) I am pissed that I messed with them in the first place, because I haven’t had time to work on the bike and I should be riding it today.
6) I think I need professional help, both for the bike and my temper.
7) I am pretty sure I know what needs to be done, but I don’t think I have the ability to do it correctly.
8) Plus, I don’t own the synch gauges/tools.
9) Do you think I should bring the bike to the Honda tech?
10) What could I have reassembled incorrectly to cause these problems?

Thanks guys for listening to my frustration.

That's too bad...

Remedy:

Get out your shop manual, get a six pack (or 3) and get busy.

I got a set of carb synch gauges on eBay for 60.00, synching is not hard to do at all, just followed the directions.

Vacuum leak is something of another matter. Not sure how I'd remedy that :( Anyone else have any thoughts?

i know exactly how you feel.  motorcycles are much more fun on the road than stuck in the garage.  i ahve learned that if you absolutely must tinker, have a bike you tinker on and one you leave alone.

It's an opportunity. I never ever learn a single thing when my bikes are running fine.
