can I use an ignition coil from another Honda model?
« on: July 06, 2006, 03:19:26 PM »
the HT leads are looking weak on my 400F coils, I've not been lucky on ebay so would like to broaden my search, are there any other Honda model coils which will fit my existing brackets, Ideally I would like non moulded coils which I could make up custom HT leads for.
The present ones have 'TEC FL703-12v' marked on them.

so, does anybody have any experience doing this on a 400f or any of the smaller bikes? the coil setup is a bit different- one coil on each side of the frame backbone.  just wondering if anyone has made this work.
Thanks!

Dyna DC8-1 coils fit with a bit of filing on the mount towers if you can afford them, they have replaceable wires. Actually they come without wires, and I recommend buying the Dyna wires at the same time as the coils to save the hassle of finding wire and connectors.
I think the CB900 coils should fit, the mount spacing looks the same and there should be clearance for the top HT lead under the tank. I haven't tried it. I have installed the Dyna ones and can testify that they fit and work.

If you get the 900 coils and they work well. Let me know Mal I’m going to get the Dyna coils after I hear the engine run, I have the Electronics got them from Z1.

Based on discussion with others with CB400's, the CB900 coils are a dufficult fit into the Cb400.  However, I read good reports using GL1000 coils  into the CB400.

Isn't that what Zane did with his bike?

thanks for that TwoTired, I was watching a set of CB900 on ebay, will switch my attention to GL1000 now.

I have found some GL1000 coils on ebay, but they seem to have what looks like a ballast resistor on them, do you know anymore details about fitting them on CB400.

Cheers,

Hey, good memory Two Tired.  I did do that swap. (Back in December, I think.)  I followed Mike Nixon's advice and simply discarded the ballast resistor that came with the GL1000 coils.

I'm always kinda worried that some of the nay-sayers will turn out to be right about this not being a good idea though - and so I don't really promote doing it in case it all goes horribly wrong somehow - some day.

The coils (once you lose the resistor) are perfectly interchangable.  Even though the GL 1000 coils mount to a GL 1000 in a different manner than 400 coils mount on a 400, the GL 1000 coils bolt right on with the 400F system ( with the bolts that go through the frame).

My GL 1000 coils (also from ebay) had the plug leads and caps still on them.  Every lead on the GL 1000 coils is longer (some MUCH longer) than the leads on the 400F.  First I unscrewd all the GL 1000 plug caps.  Then I mounted the GL 1000 coils with the original leads intact.  I cut them to size, swapped out the sheathing and cylinder number bands and caps from my 400F coils.

The wiring was the only significant adaptation I really had to make.  The GL coils had a three or four - blade, pin type, plug connector and an extra wire or two for the ballast.  I cut that stuff off and added bullet connectors so it was like the original 400F coil wiring.  Except for those little numbers on the sides of the two coils, it all looks identical to the way it looked with the original, 400F coils.

It was easier to actually do too, than I had thought it would be.  The main, tough part was figuring out the deal with that resistor.

For me, this swap seems to work like a bomb.  I took Two Tired's advice, and widened the spark plug gaps to the max recommended (or a little bit past).  Goes like stink.

I should say though, that I made the effort to find Nippon Denso points, and installed them as well.  Evidently the ND product is superior to many other points, and they are more suited to the increased rigours placed on the points by the GL 1000 coils.  (I guess if you have an electronic ignition this won't matter to you much at all .....)

Here's a shot that probably doesn't say much ... but it's authentic anyway.....

The bottom line, fitment wise - they go in smooth as butter.  (Which makes sense, because they're exactly the same size and design.)

I'm glad that someone else is trying this .... more experience for all.

..... so thanks!

Cheers.

Zane - Why is your bike all clean and new-like, with only light yellowing on the exhaust pipes?? Did you buy it NOS/still in the crate??   :o

.... light yellowing on the exhaust pipes ....!  Where do you see that!!??

My bike's kinda like an old movie star.  When you see it from ten feet back or so, it looks pretty darn good.  But change the lighting, and look closely, and you'll see lots of flaws - bits of rust here and there - a few dings and paint scrapes - stuff like that.

It was in pretty good condition when I bought it last year.  It had only two previous owners, and had always been stored indoors.  The pipes were in great condition - and that has a lot to do with the overall impression of a 400F, I think.  The spokes were pretty rough though, and the engine paint was in ugly shape.  I Autosol-ed the spokes back into shiney shape, and I stripped the paint off the engine covers and polished the bare aluminum.

The spokes are still a real pain to keep in nice shape.  They really are a labor of love - 'cause if I didn't love the look there's no way I would spend the time it takes to make them look decent.

I took the scenic route up to the Port Parry sport bike rally yesterday, and I got a lot of comments on my old bike while I was there.  There are a lot of men (mostly men) around my age who have really fond memories of the 400/4's.

And speaking of NOS/in the crate - did you see that NOS/still in the Honda box 1976 Parakeet Yellow tank that sold on ebay for around $1100.00?  Yikes!  Sure would be nice to have, but at that price it's a little scarey, I think.

many thanks TwoTired & Zane, lots of good info there to give me confidence to go the GL1000 route.

Your coils JPG was so dark (on my monitor), I had to Gamma correct about 4.5...it looks nice, but there seemed to be a yellowish cast to the pipes...just my imagination, I guess...   ;D

Okay, I see that.  It is yellow down there.  I guess it's the chips response to the weird lighting in my underground parking.  Here's a brighter, colour adjusted version.

Sorry - I thought you were having me on - that is until I looked closely at the full size shot.  Yellow and dark ......

The main thing I was trying to say is that they're the same size and shape as the 400 coils, and go in slick as snot on a door knob.

Mine looks like it was parked in a pine forest in Pennsylvania...which it was...   :'(

A pine forest eh ....

It must smell nice then .....

When I swapped out the coils I took the 400f metal rigging bits and gave them a good cleaning.  (Varsol and then Autosol.)  That was a lot easier to do when it was apart, like it was.  I wiped down the GL1ooo coils with my favorite stuff - Back to Black.
