cb350 head resurfacing spec
« on: October 25, 2012, 07:47:19 AM »
hey all,

i had a few questions about a cb350 head resurfacing spec. i got my head resurffaced but it looks like theres too much cut away. theres a spot by the exhaust port that was resurfec too (sepertate from the actual head surface) because it has been resurfaced so far. i dont thing the machine shop has taken off far too much, but how much is too much? i know if its too resurfaced the gasket may not crush correctly from the head bolt caps bottoming out. i didnt want to install it without asking because i have already wasted 2 head gaskets on seperate rebuilds and do not want to waste a third.

so to be clear, how much is too much to remove from a cb350 head sureface or how do you know when you have gone too far?

Machinists rule would be to resurface to the extent that a "witness" remains.

A "witness" is original surface that is just starting to show tool marks.

This means the bare minimum of material has been removed.

I would not resurface a cylinder head on a honda unless absolutely necessary.
I sure would NOT let a car repair machinist work on it, without any instructions.

they do mainly work on car engines but thats just because there arent as many bikes in louisville probably. they could use the business. and they have done alot of motorcycles and mainly older ones too like 60's 70's triumph, bsa, harley, honda. so i thought theyd be fine. i dont think they took too much off. i did for sure need it. my head warped and i blew 2 heaad gaskets to find it out (1 used, 1 new) now im on #3 and want to make sure its right. ill try to get her all together this weekend and let you guys know. ill also look for the witness mark too. i had heard of this mark before when i worked in manufacturing but i think they called it something else.

would it be a problem to add an extra brass spacer under only the capped nuts? to make sure they dont top out? and as long as there are no interferences?

And lot of auto shop charge per cut, and take 10 or 20. Thought for first cut..they use a level to set them up, can miss low dips..
