Cb750 unknown year with automotive alternator
« on: October 28, 2012, 05:08:21 AM »
Thinking about buying this its pretty much a parts bike but it has a title. He said it wasn't charging. The pictures show what appears to be a automotive alternator on it. Has anybody seen or done that.

Post a pic of it, I'm curious to see how crazy of a set up that would look like.

well here's the deal on it i just got off the phone with the guy. the charging system was not working he couldn't afford to fix it so he rigs this alternator up that he has laying around.so long story short it's a parts ONLY bike.the pulley is now a permanent fixture to the engine. he said it runs real good but the alternator is going out,and it will not charge anymore.and for me to drive 95 miles one way to be bummed out is not worth it.so I'm going to pass.but anyway here is a picture of it. it is kind of cool looking though

Strange I have that taillight for my chop project.  I think it's from a 39 chevy panel truck.

Looks like to me that the front RIM is worth more than the whole bike.

It looks  like a HENRY ABE MAG , I could be wrong due to size of picture.

Now that is different it would not be hard to just change that alt.. Cheap and plentiful at any junk yard. Built in vreg. How much did he want? Change a few thing and it would be that bad.

I wonder what he used to keep oil in the motor at crank end. I assume he welded a pulley to end of crank, sounds like..

I kind of like the idea.
The belt guard could be a little more attractive. 8)
I like the fact that the alternator does not protrude from the side of the engine.

I would hope that the person that made that would not have WELDED the pulley onto the crank because it would be crooked. I doubt that is the  case.

Look at the rest of it, I better welded it, if not he drilled, and pinned it,, and took up the taper space with epoxy or jb weld..

There is a main bearing right there at crank exit point, usually to contain the oil, a full plate bolts in place of dyno cover. Or you tap a few holes in the case, and install a seal plate.
How much oil will come out..A LOT... I know, I had it happen to the dirt tracker, and it made for a did not get on track day.
The sellers work looks rough, tank is cool, ask what is inside those cases..maybe..

I have seen this done by endurance racers...they need the extra clearance for cornering, but can't run total loss electrics because of the length of the races...I think someone on here did a beautiful job of it...I would have to search the hi-po forum to find who it was, I believe they used the alternator from a lawn tractor
If it works good, it looks good...

Slightly off topic, but any chance there is a better photo of that bike's front end? It looks like some kind of leading link set up and I'm just curious.
