Love my 4 into 4 but cant find replacements.. go custom?
« on: July 09, 2006, 09:41:16 AM »
1978 K8... I love and want to keep the 4 into 4 look.  Anyone know where I can get either OEM or reproduction exhaust for this guy?  I heard once the older model exhausts will actually fit the 77 and 78, can anyone verify this?

If I do go custom...
1.  How much can i expect to pay (with or without chrome)
2.  I wouldn't mind getting just open pipes to save on the fabrication costs but have heard (from the posts here) that rejetting can be a total nitemare.  Anyone want to calm my fears?
3.  Is this gonna drop the value of the bike (almost entire stock)?

Thanks all, your feedback and knowledge has been invaluable...

at least 1000 US for the whole set

Well a new set is very expensive as the junky said. You have a couple of options however.

If your header pipes are still good, as they usually are, you can whack of the bad mufflers and weld on some new slip-ons. Thats what I did and I used slashcut megaphones. I think they look better than stock and still sound good. You can choose whatever slipons you want of course.

another option is to get some mac 4-4 drags. These are short and end just a little after the front pegs. loud and will probably require a little jetting, maybe. The K8 carbs work different than the 69 - 76 years. You really dont have to jet much with different exhausts as old fart would tell you.

I have heard that the pipes can be swapped but I dont know anything about that.

Best as I know, the 77/78 exhausts are no longer available from Honda.  WIth a good bit of paitence you might be able to source out a complete NOS set but that would probably take a good chunk of $.  Used pipes could be an option but I have seen a good number these pipes that look decent on the outside but have loose internals rattling around inside.  Having a new set made up to look the part of the originals would  probably be even more expensive but you could check with Swarbick racing in the UK for the racing type 4-4 exhausts.  Also Cycleexchange makes a pretty bad ass looking set of straight pipes but this wouldn't look anything like your stockers.  The older exhausts should mount up to the 77/78s as long as you get the spiggots and mounting bolts from the earlier bikes as well.  The mounting brackets in the back may or may not be a perfect fit but this shouldn't be too big of a deal.  As far as devaluing your bike . . . .Original pipes would likely add a bit to your selling price, but this is all relative.  The later years of the SOHC 750s in particular were made in abundance and do not seem to go for as much $ as the early ones.  I would guess that  the amount you would recoup from selling your bike with orginal pipes would be a small percentage of the acutal cost of a replacement set pipes.

Swarbricks 4/4 race pipes are £600 with baffles (£400 without) and you still have to shape the tailpipes yourself
and they come in unfinnished metal.
So they aren't realy a good road option.

In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.
